Chappell Framing Square

In my quest to improve my fine woodworking skills, I find the need to upgrade what I use for tools paramount to my success. Whether it be electric or hand tools, I had come to the conclusion awhile back that this cheap, foreign stuff marketed to us just is not cutting it.

I had a discussion with a local timber framer close by me by the name of Tait Chappell. He lives close by where I live and also runs a timber framing school called Fox Maple which is just a stones throw away in the western foothills of Maine.

Tait is in the final stages of prototype manufacturing and is ready to release to the public what I consider the best framing square I have laid my hands on. Now, this is not just any ordinary framing square mind you. A transformation was envisioned in what many of us consider just a simple tool to mark plumb cuts and stair stringers.

http://www.chappellsquare.com/

For starters, it is made of stainless steel. That in itself makes this a damn nice framing square. My preferred square to this point was a blue anodized aluminum square. I never liked steel squares. Heavy, hot in the sun, rust.

What makes this square really unique is what is photo etched ON the square. All of you remember the rafter charts that have been on there since any of us can remember. I can tell you now, the information provided on the sides of this square are so extensive and well thought out.....it may just replace the construction master. It is that extensive. I have looked through the booklet that came with it and I'm still amazed at what information is on there.

Charts for unequal pitched roofs!

The instructional booklet can be downloaded here in pdf form. 48 pages of bed time reading!

http://www.foxmaple.com/Chappell_Sq_Bklt.3.pdf

A couple of interesting and cool feature is that the tongue is not the traditional 16", it is 18" and everything is marked in 20th's of an inch. Look closely at the photos. Also a mark for the 16.97 for valley markings.

Mr. Chappell has two versions of the Universal Square. The 24" standard Master Framer square, and the one I have is what Tait calls the Traveler Square. It is a 12"x18".

Best of all IMO, is the fact that this square is 100% USA Born!

The quality and thought put into this framing square is hands down miles ahead of anything on the market.

If any of you are in the same mindset as I am, tired of the cheap crap and wanting to only buy things once for the rest of your life, and buy American.... this is a great start. This square may just be heirloom quality. I wish I had this 25 years ago.

Re: Chappell Framing Square

Looks like it could be an extremely useful tool. I would sure benefit from having it as I have never warmed up to the construction master. Seems like someone who timber frames would benefit the most. I still have an old square somewhere that has some useful information about machine screw sizes or something.

Re: Chappell Framing Square

This is a beauty Kent. I'm not much into laying out rafters these days so in my similar quest for finding a precision US made "framing" square I bought the Woodpeckers 26" x 14" square. One of their special tool run offs. Love it. May have to get my own Traveler's Square though. Thanks for the info.

I may just buy one of those to hang over the mantle.

Definitely looks like a treasure to be handed down through the generations.

It's also an interesting conversation piece.

Re: Chappell Framing Square

Don't sandblast that brass one. Try Brasso & some 4x steel wool.

Take a shot on the steel one.

Ask Santa for one o' them Chappell"s.

I have an abiding appreciation for fine crafted, well thought-out tools, made by actual crafts folk in exchange for compensation that they can actually raise a family and build a life on.

I'm funny like that.

Thanks for posting it Kent, I look forward to adding one to the arsenal.

That's a really sweet looking square.

I don't have a construction master. I use geometry to discover the nine bevels in a roof. Doesn't anyone know how to do this anymore?

Re: Chappell Framing Square

Shipping to Canada is a good question. Don't you guys have trouble getting tools from the US shipped to you?

I don't want to comment on how much because I'm not sure if the price is promotional, if it is wholesale...you get the idea.

Lots of guys can use math, but the CM is quicker, and time is money.

Re: Chappell Framing Square

No problem getting tools shipped to Canada. No bladed tools like knives though.

If you ship via private carrier eg. Purolator, FedEx, etc. you will pay a hefty brokerage fee. Have the supplier ship Parcel Post if at all possible.

Takes a little longer but worth it.

Or..........some nice American fellow could buy one and ship it Parcel Post as a Christmas present

I don't know how to use one of those new fangled things. I'm stuck with the old way.

I don't have a Blackberry either. Rats.

Ninja, when you pass it on to your son he wont believe how cheap things were back in the day.

And your grandson will cherish grandpappy's square every morning as he hops in his hovercar to head off to the jobsite.
