Best Rust Remover/Preventer For Metal

By keeping my tools in a pole barn, they take on rust.

Mainly surface rust. Bits & all sorts of various metal tools.

Other than basic "rust remover in spray can" -- suggestions?

Anything I can drop them in rather than doing individually?

Submerge them in evaporust. Becareful if the tool has other non-ferrus parts are the stuff can damage certain materials.

Since I'm a sucker for Henkel products I'd spray on a little Maxi-Coat to prevent further rust. Just wipe it down the second you spray it or the coating will be really thick.

I have been cleaning up and "restoring" some old hatchets and axes recently.

Soaking in white vinegar works well and is inexpensive.

Fluid film will change the way you think about rust prevention forever...at least for me it did.

I'd really like to do a side-by-side between Maxi-Coat, Fluid Film, Krown, Rust Check, Rust Block and Corrosion Free.

Re: Best Rust Remover/Preventer For Metal

I have the same problem with tools rusting. When we get to the time of year with cold nights and warm days the water will just condense on the tools inside the tool box. I found good old muratic acid from the hardware store works well. I just put an inch or two in the bottom of a plastic toolbox and let them soak for a half hour or so. Works great but leaves raw bare metal that will rust again in a second so paint or boiled linseed oil is a good idea afterwords.

I've used Evapo-rust and Bullfrog rust remover, Bullfrog is pretty good, has an inhibitor to prevent 'flash rusting' after cleaning. I like the Evapo-rust better though.
I treat my tools with boiled linseed oil cut with a very small amount of turpentine. Use a very thin
coat and it'll harden up good. Doesn't take much, and I always have some around for finishing anyway
