10" Dual Compound Sliding Miter Saw, Makita Or Hitachi Or Other?

I have been using a Hitachi for a while now (not mine, but a carpenter friend has one he brings over often), and my question is this. What other brands are comparable?

I have heard great things about Makita, and they offer a nice collapsable stand. Hitachi is the least expensive around here, and I am a firm believer of "you get what you pay for". Is the price reflecting a lesser product, or am I just reading too much into it?

I am also looking into a stand, anything you guys recommend?

FYI, I am an electrician, not a carpenter. This saw will get light use, in my own home.

TIA,

Streamline

Also FYI, the Kapex is not in the budget, so no need to mention that. You know who you are. And no, I don't need any systainers either.

I have the Makita 10". It has been a great saw for many years. I do find that the 10" is really best for trim work. If your useing it for construction you want something like the 12" DeWalt (my next purchase). Deeper cutting when saw is set at compound angle. You can cut a 4x4 post at 45 with the 12" but not the 10".

As far as stands, there are several different portable stands for the chop saws. I have some off brand name that works really well. Extends to 12' and has rollers on the extention arms. The DeWalt stand has a slide pad on the extension bars instead of rollers and a feature I like about it when I recently looked at it was there is a stop attached to the pad that you can fold out of the way when doing normal cutting or flip over and use when makeing multiple cuts of same length. You just have to look at them and see what features work best for you. Overall the portable stands are very handy. They fold up to about 6' in length and have carry handle, light weight, and fit in the back of a truck or van very easily.

Streamline,
If you are looking for a very nice saw I would go with the makita LS1016L. It has just about the cutting capacity of a 12" Its also incredibly smooth. I replaced my dewalt 12" with it probly almost a year ago. I've used it a whole lot without a problem.

I own the Hitachi and have 0 complaints with it. I like it a lot. It's also $100 cheaper than the Makita. For occasional home use, I don't see how you could go wrong.

The C10FSB is probably the best value in a 10inch and is Hitachi Made in Japan, not china like the newer stuff. That being said, Im not a huge fan of the small fence because I do alot of crown and for that reason, I prefer the Makita LS1016 DXT.

Re: 10" Dual Compound Sliding Miter Saw, Makita Or Hitachi Or Other?

Thanks for the feedback gents.

I am going to my tool supplier today to check them both out. There are some features I like about the Makita, but I have more experience with the Hitachi. The problem lies with the supplier being backordered on the Makita until April 23rd. Lucky for me it is the 26th, but I'm sure there is a great possibility that they have not come in yet.

I am buying today, so I'll let you know my decision this evening.

Thanks again,

Brendon

Definietly the makita ls1016 , All hitachi products got to much plastic over the years and are now geared for big box stores and homeowners!
Makita is geared more to contractors who use there tools and i see the upgrades they made to this saw are what contractors wanted and not to cut cost to produce a cheaper saw for the homeowner !

The Makita LS1016L, you can't go wrong with that choice. The new Makita stand is very nice as well. I believe there are package deals on the stand with the saw. This gets you a nice stand and saw at a much better price. Looks like for around $200 extra you get the Makita stand compared to just the saw.

The Hitachi C10FSB is a 100% great professional tool. I highly recommend it but next time I'm going for the bigger capacity Hitachi C12FDH with laser guideline. Its supposed to be very durable but a little bit heavy but I'm a big boy so I'll manage :-)

I ended up getting the Makita, and so far so good. In lieu of the stand, I picked up a Dewalt self leveling crosshair doo-hickie for my upcoming trim job, and my basement drop ceiling.

Yup good choice streamline! I used my dewalt the other day for a quick weekend job, what a difference. The dewalt almost feels primitive! Like my dads old 9" black and decker
