Touch-ups For Hardware Scuffs

It doesn't happen very often but sometimes we have a tech who will scuff a piece of hardware during install or repair. When this happens we have touch-up paint and/or techniques to buff things out or make them look good. Many times you can't tell there was ever a scuff. Once on a large construction site we are told to leave it because the GC had a touch-up crew that comes in and cleans glass, touches up paint or molding etc.
Anyway, this newest project was a first for me. We had a piece of hardware scuffed and when my tech went to touch it up the project manager refused to let him even try. He wants all new hardware. I raised my eyebrow at that one. Since it is for a bigger client and the replacement hardware is less than $200 I will probably do it, but I am curious to know what a lot of you have for policies like this. This project probably won't be a big deal, but if it was something big like a $5000 oven or something it would be nice to how other contractors handle the situation.

When you say hardware, what are you talking about?

It varies. This job it is the side of a panic bar. But over the years I've had technicians ding doors. (if its metal we buff and paint if its wood we fill) or maybe they scratch a wall which we touch up with paint.
