Leads For GC's

I'm new to this forum, and fairly new to the commercial construction field. I was wondering, for anyone who is trying to generate business working for a General Contractor, trying to find jobs to bid on, etc, how do you go about generating leads, or calling on the right people? What kind of people/companies do you call on?

Of course there are online forums like Dodge, iSqft, TheBlueBook, etc, but most of the time I'm too late to the game when I find something worth pursuing on there. Also, do you have any recommendations for large national chains/brands to try and become an approved vendor for?

Do you call on architects/designers? Property managers? Real Estate and/or development companies?

Any and all advice is welcome! Thanks so much! By the way, I am here in Houston, Tx, but this is a pretty general question I'm asking that could apply anywhere.
