Siding Ideas

I need to re-side the front of my house. Details of the current siding is 5/8" celotex foam, no housewrap, Abitibi stucco board siding and 1X6 RSC trim. When this was built 32 years ago, the framer did the siding AND the flashing, and generally not very well. (Note no turnout on sidewall flashing @ the little porch roof)To keep from having exposed joints in the field, the siding was all pieced in, with just the trim to cover the raw joints underneath. Then it was all caulked, top AND bottom, pretty much guaranteeing failure once the caulk on top failed.

While I'm not averse to the same style look that's there now, (done properly!), I thought I'd ask for some fresh ideas. Maybe something with a little "pop". I've thought about using Hardie stucco panels, maybe with the shingle panels on the gable.

The second picture is of the two houses across the street, to give an idea of what I don't want. The tri-level was a diy reside with individual shingles, and the 2-story is the same plan as mine with 8" lap, a look I hate.

No vinyl, please.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Very Cool Guardian
I would like to see a siding picture thread stickied in the siding forum so stuff like this doesn't fall off the page.

I know you don't want to hear it, but the house with the shingles looks pretty good.

As long as you don't put a straight edge on his lines, yeah. Behind the shingles is the same stucco board as mine, but it has 2X rsc trim. Basically he covered all the existing vertical with either shingles or cottage lap. That right side of the garage is cottage and so is the left side gable wall.

I like that look, but now that it's across the street I don't want to do the same. I've never been a fan of board and batten . It was common around here in the 70's, and is making kind of a comeback, but in conjunction with dry-stacked stone and/or clear finished cedar, usually just on a garage gable. I think that it's probably more common on the east coast, or with cedar out west.
