Re: How Do You Sharpen Your Pencil?

I use a table saw tapering jig to get the rough shape. A couple of passes over the jointer (really fine- don't be too aggressive), then sand it with 60-grit, followed by 100-, 150-, and 220-grit paper. Finally I use a cabinet scraper to remove the fine sanding marks. It sucks when I snap the tip on my first mark and have to start all over...

Typically with a utility knife, but have used a block plane in a jam.

This is what I do:

Takes 7-10 seconds per pencil. This is what the OSS sharpened pencils look like:

Re: How Do You Sharpen Your Pencil?

Utility knife most often. I've been known to grab a belt sander if it's close LOL.

Ever seen those pencils with liquid lead? Looks like a yellow #2 pencil, but it's not. They can be good for some fine stuff, but not everything.

Re: How Do You Sharpen Your Pencil?

man you guys are serious about pencils. If it has a lead showing...good nuff, for framing anyway. I had no idea there were ppl out there drum sanding points and block plane, that must hurt like hell in your bags.
what do I know I am new maybe I will improve my skills if I have a pencil with a pointy point.

you could have the sharpest pencil but in the end the cut man determines the fit.

Re: How Do You Sharpen Your Pencil?

I have a pencil addiction....I buy them by the dozens!!!

I've always loved Dixon Ticonderoga pencils. About a year ago I started using the big pencil that kids use. I was replenishing my supply when I found the best pencil ever. Ticonderoga "My First tri-write". They work great for framing, and finish work!!

I fastened a pencil sharpener to the side of my table saw with a couple zip screws.

Utility knife here. Watching carpenters write with dull points drive me nuts! I've been known to take a pencil off a guy and sharpen it for him!

Re: How Do You Sharpen Your Pencil?

Whatever is closest...typically my pocket knife or utility knife. I need a tracking device for my pencils I think I'm up to 3 a day with a 60% recovery rate...they don't even get the chance to get dull.

As a side note I had a friend who is not-so-handy help me out on a job onece and first thing i did was toss him a knife and a pencil and said sharpen it....4 minutes later all I hear is cursing as the pencil has been reduced to 3 inches and still no exposed lead. That marked the beginning of a long day.

Re: How Do You Sharpen Your Pencil?

Framing, a knife, sharpen both ends.
In '75, I was too cheap to buy a wooden keel holder, so I made one. I keep one end in a 3" piece of washing machine hose, keel in the other end. 3 colors of keel plus pencils when doing layout. I don't stop to sharpen as often.

Years ago, I showed that to my mobile nail supplier, a week later his company had similar with logo on. Two months later, all the yards and box stores had their own. I missed on that one!

Trim work, mechanical pencil, one click, sharp. Sharpen pencil per day=6 times x 5 days a week=30 x 1 minute each =30min. x 50 weeks = 25 hours a year ----- you could be earning $$ Be safe, GBAR

Re: How Do You Sharpen Your Pencil?

I need 15 posts before I can post a URL. Just filling in time here. When framing I use a piece of clear tubing to connect blue and red crayons together. Could do this with pencils and only have to go to the sharpener half the time.
