Re: Would You Have A DNA Ancestry Test Done?

I had it done probably 10 years ago.

We hit a snag with the 7th generation grandfather's father and I thought getting it done might help.

I was remodeling a bathroom for a chap that started one of these companies. He deciphered all the results for me.

Turns out I'm English, Scottish, North American Indian and Middle Eastern.

He said the Middle Eastern part dated back to probably 1100 AD-ish and figured someone (slave, servant, or just all-around good guy) came back from the Crusades with someone from Great Britain. Voila.

I watched a show a few years ago...they did the genealogy tests on a class of high school kids.

The one student who thought she had the least amount of "black blood" in her, turned out to have the most.

She was a blonde, blue-eyed, stunning beauty. To say the least, she was surprised.

I've read that most places on planet earth have a mixture...except for one place in China....still pretty "pure".

We purchased the 23 & Me ancestry & health options at last year's holiday pricing. It is consumer grade and does not give the results you see with a $1000 physician prescribed, but definitely worth the money.

There are also various studies they give you the option to opt-in on.

My friend prides himself on being 100% pure Aryan. When he was told he seemed to have a very small amount of black blood in him, you would of thought he was told he had 5 minutes to live. Dna tests are great but you really need to be prepared for the unexpected.

I guess the bigger question is why do you have white Aryan friends?

So somebody named "Palmer" or "Palmers" was originally maybe a Smith or Jones but got their named changed when they came back from the Crusades.

Guess they will never know before that time frame who they originally were.

Well they were known just by their first name as most people lived in small hamlets and every one new each other, its only as these places grew that we needed to know which john you meant, john of the wood ?, john the smith, or john who lives by the brook, or the rivers, how about john who makes arrows "fletcher", john the palmer a man that had been to the holy land.

I'm Rob the street builder... Guess it's good it's in German otherwise would be pretty weird.

People don't realize most surnames originate from a trade or profession. I've always thought that was kind of cool.

I have never understood why people want to find DNA stuff. What good comes out of it? You have your family stories and that is worth a million times more than DNA without knowing anything else. The value is in the "why" and not the "what" so why bother finding the what without a why?

Re: Would You Have A DNA Ancestry Test Done?

One of my nieces apparently had her DNA sent in, I guess out of curiosity, and she was, contacted by a woman who claimed to have common ancestry.

She agreed to meet with this lady and it turns out that one of my Aunts on my Mom's side had gotten pregnant when she was pretty young. Gave the child up for adoption and moved on with her life.

Through the link with my niece, the "stranger" was able to meet her birth mother prior to her moms death.

Kind of cool, kind of creepy. But I have a cousin I've never known about or met.

Curiosity is a good enough reason for me. Especially when I can't even tell you much about anyone in my family.

Re: Would You Have A DNA Ancestry Test Done?

I am about to do the blood test/genealogy routine for the first time. I am doing it to use to check on the agreement with my own ancestry research and find out where the recent liars may be.

I have my family tree with more than 18,500 "related" people in it. I use the program "Family Tree Maker" to keep track of everything possible in one place. This is a universal record keeping program from Ancestry Inc. in some way that allows people to display information in an organized way. It is a great tool for genealogists.

Just asking "Aunt Millie" for family information is immediate and fun. You get some information that may agree with other sources. The Family Tree program allows you to keep track of all bits/items (facts, dates, names, residences by date)and lets you determine what is most reliable without erasing anything that may be possible based on later information found.

From anything in the last 200 years, the best records are the census reports (the actual papers from the census enumerator). They show the addresses, names used at the time for each family in addition to ages/birth dates, occupations and some other comments. - This opens up the opportunity to put pieces together correctly for a recent time period. Unfortunately, many European records have been lost due to wars. The exception in the Scandinavian records keep in local parishes and logs from Viking expeditions to the "new" world and Europe/Asia. Many of the Scandinavian queens came from Russian and eastern European sources.

I was interested in my parents ancestry. I knew my mother and father and their siblings and parents. While out at the cemetery I saw my great-grandfather's stone and his children's stones. - There was one person that I ever heard of. She was born in the same period as the others, but never mentioned. When looking at a census report of the neighborhood, I saw a family across the alley and down a block. I saw a female with the same first name age of my great aunt and got the names of the property owners. -The owner was a police Sargent that had a son the age of my great aunt. No one would give much information about my great-aunt, so I dug further. It turned out the policeman that signed in death report. That seemed agree with the reports/suggestions of a miscarriage.

When you look at much older records all information/clues that should be looked at closely. There was a guy known Karl I, that had a common name of Charlemagne that was the Ruler of the Holy Roman Empire that had many wives and many children. It was said that a hundred or two years after his reign that he was related to the majority of the population Europe and countries established later.

One thing to keep in mind is that in Europe, the borders and names have changed during the last 200 years. My great-grandfather was born in 1837 in Luxembourg.

His records show him being a "German" or a "Luxembourger". I found out he was born on the east side of a river and the other side was Germany. I found he was a student that moved from Luxembourg to France to study at catholic church, but returned within a year (failed or kicked out). He immediately came to the U.S. via ship to NY, and eventually Milwaukee where he became bartender and later a saloon owner in a few towns and finally to St. Paul where he worked in bars (according to city records). The records show he also started an upholstery business for 10 years and then built a 5 bedroom house for his 4 daughters and two sons. When my father sold the house the buyer sold the interior mill-work (prime, never painted) for more than the house. The adjacent lots became a police station and a neighboring strip club.

During the period just before and after WW2, people conveniently used what was most comfortable are valuable to create reasonably accurate history. Later, people just forgot or were creative. The blood tests do not lie and can always be "lost". - It all depends out how much the information means to you and what your time is worth.
