Does it matter that much if you have to go through that.

Re: World's Highest Amusement Park

Yes overcrowding is a issue there.

Commercialized and lower costs have brought too many amateur climbers creating bottlenecks in the death zone

I posted about that earlier this AM.
Crazy, innit?

Plus I think I read some place that ice is disappearing, revealing corpses from past failed climbs. Yuck !

I was wondering if anybody had posted on it. I looked through "Off Topic" and also "Random Thoughts" and didn't see anything.

I wonder who the first enterprising Sherpa will be that blocks the summit and won't let anybody up unless they pay a "toll".

You wait until the climber is literally maybe 10 feet away, then block their way.

Re: World's Highest Amusement Park

I have seen stories on tv about how trash and human waste is a problem at base camp there. It stays to cold for it to decompose or wash down the mountain. They melt snow to drink and cook with. 🤮

I don't know that the ice is "disappearing" as much as it reflects weather from year to year. There is a very limited window for climbers, and the path up is very narrow...what I heard in a lecture decades ago from a climber discussing his trek was that if someone fell....they could very well never be recovered....so it is conceivable that they could be buried and out of sight until the wind sweeps the snow clear or sublimation(?) of the snow naturally exposes a body.

I do remember that the climbers are supposed to bring down everything they take up...trash, waste, and bodies.

Not sure if the link will come through but it says that the photo is recent, and is the final ridge to the Everest Summit.

The reality is so different than one would think, isn't it? Here's an interesting short documentary on the Sherpas who are the only reason almost anyone ever gets to the summit............

Re: World's Highest Amusement Park

I think it is technology that is making it "easier" to do.

For 1,500 bucks you can probably get an entire set of gear and be prepared. Then all the info is on the net.

Not like 30-40 years ago or more, when it was a massive and mysterious undertaking.

Re: World's Highest Amusement Park

Everest is not a highly technical climb...but there is a "death zone" where oxygen is needed if you have to stick around very long. Functioning in the death zone or trying to is what gets many climbers killed that and avalanches.

k-2, Annapurna, and some of the other peaks that are highly technical and only attempted by professionals are rarely climbed compared to Everest

Re: World's Highest Amusement Park

A climber was just on FOX. He said the picture that has gone viral was the result of only a 3 day weather window of getting to the summit. Last year there were 11 days when Nepal allowed for it.

Plus, he said the new generation of Sherpas have lowered their prices to $30K where it used to be $40K-$60K. A lot more people find it more affordable and simply have to have the "selfie" on top of Everest.

Re: World's Highest Amusement Park

I had the pleasure of viewing the world from an altitude of 30,000 feet. I gazed in awe at the magnificent scenery. Around that time, the flight attendant came by and offered me another beer, which made the experience even better.

Fully expect Disney to sign a 99 year lease now, and turn it into a "Disney
Experience".

That's not true about the lemmings. Disney THREW the lemmings off of the cliff!
