Wild Mushrooms Anyone?

Curious if anyone is into mushroom hunting/foraging, or has a taste for them. If so, what do you go for? I'm picking up a curiosity, since I have family that's been into it for years. Now thinking about identifying some the next time they pop nearby, which just might be Boletus edulis (King bolete, or porcini)

Does it share a common thread with those who game hunt, since they develop a solid knowledge of the land?

On another note, there seem to be several popular youtube geniuses that could get folks killed with misinformation and just plain bad advice, or failing to convey the risk by lack of info on a few.

Do you check them every time for true vs. false morels, or just know by now?

Re: Wild Mushrooms Anyone?

I just know the difference; smell, shape, location, color and texture. I've come across false morels at other locations and they look distinctively different to me.

Re: Wild Mushrooms Anyone?

I use to pick them out of cow paddies outside of Houston. Nastiest tasting thing you'd ever eat but the trip was superb, ha. Sunburst on top of white shroom that had to bleed purple for the real McCoy. I remember playing spades, the jacks and queens were talking to me after drinking a glass of some pretty potent tea.

Re: Wild Mushrooms Anyone?

Northern California Coast is big mushroom country.

You can even buy them at Farmer's Markets here.

It's so common, just about every year Search and Rescue gets paged out for a missing 'shroom hunter.

My brother collects them up at our ranch. Really nothing like them.

I guess it's pretty easy to identify them, once you learn the process.

Never touched the psycho stuff. That scares the $%@T out of me.

Morels
Chanterelles
Chicken and Hen of the Woods
Trumpets

Best year ever in the Shenandoah Valley.
I must have harvested 300 lbs of chants this year.

Boletes are tasteless.
As are corals and a myriad of others.
I don’t even bother wasting the energy to bend down for em.
