Who You Are

Years ago, I was told who you are and what you do may not be the same thing.

If you look at old family farmers, they're farmers, and that's also what they do. It keeps them focused and active as long as their health holds out.

Old painters were the same. They kept painting because that was who they were and what they did.

It was the same with carpenters. They may not be framing anymore, but they could still two bang in their 70s.

If you love what you do and it is who you are, you're going to keep doing it as long as you can. You may still be at it when you're 80.

If you haven't figured out who you are, retirement becomes a difficult proposition, you're leaving one thing behind, but who are you and where are you going?

The same issue can come up with a major injury. Whether you love what you do or not, you may have to change who you think you are.

If you're lucky, you could be like the 72 yo arborist still putting on the climbing spikes to take down a tree trunk.

Re: Who You Are

Which is sadly why so many folks deteriorate so rapidly after they leave the work behind. I heard something on bbc radio about politicians after they leave office, regardless of whether they were successful or not. Apparently, Margaret Thatcher had a very hard time of it, despite her achievements. And Theresa May will likely have problems for not delivering brexit, and having nothing to replace the limelight. We shall see.

And on the other hand, my highly successful friend defines himself by his ability to golf. He says that if/when he can no longer golf, stick a fork in him..he's done.

True, but what do you do when you can't any more.

Plus some on here can't seem to stay retired. I'm one of them. I'm just not built that way. If it wasn't this, it would be something else.

People in the military can really struggle with this if they get disabled. They were a soldier, now what are they?

Traditionally, women had this all figured out. They had their duties and then caring for family, church activities, etc.

One who lived to 103 was still driving when she was 102. Her family insisted she use a cane, so she always had one, but she just carried it in her hand.

For her, church, family, and friends was what she was all about. She was also very independent.

Re: Who You Are

That's why we are planning on how we attack retirement. Staying busy traveling the world is who we will be. I also want to build an old car. Not sure exactly what one yet, but I want a shop.. I try to define the profession and not let it define me.

Re: Who You Are

Best to stay working for as long as you can. Retirement is like a long vacation. You eat out more and your credit card bills go through the roof.

My Father was running through the list of money he has been spending lately (retired for 20 years now) and I said Jesus you spend more now than when you were working. He said "you got that right...it's a race to the bottom"

Re: Who You Are

I'm hoping to spend more in retirement. It's not the guy who dies with the most money wins. Ideally you want to spend your last dollar in the last minute of your life.

Age has a funny of way of catching up with us....fast. It's almost like dog years after age 50. So do "it" while you're still in relatively good health, whatever your "it" may be.

One of the things I didn't do the first time I retired is start working out. I'd definitely work out, it's easier to stay fit than get back into shape.

Re: Who You Are

Isolation is a common problem among those who have already retired. I can imagine initially being excited about not having to go to work anymore and then being overwhelmed that there is very little to do. You really have to force yourself to socialize and do hobbies with other people --- I think men would find doing this harder than women though.
