"White Christmas" Got Me Thinking

I was just thinking about the song White Christmas (and others too) I find it strange that this song and many Christmas songs are based on areas that get snow in wintertime. But there are a lot of places that dont get snow.

Do you guys who never get snow feel like your "out of the loop" or anything when this music is on or just in general when it comes to Christmas time? It's almost like those snowy Christmas songs are only for specific areas. And also, do you all have the same amount of fun with no snow? What do kids get told about not building snowmen, santa, snow angels, etc...?

just curious is all....

Well, Never thought about the white christmas like that, I have been in the snow and i dont. think i reallly feel left out i enjoy working year around, not being snow bound at times, But i still like the Song.

Being from south Louisiana, its just a little wet, and muddy at times.

Re: "White Christmas" Got Me Thinking

Though I get your point, I'm not sure that "White Christmas" counts as a valid example. The lyrics actually start:

The sun is shining
The grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway.
I've never seen such a day
In Beverly Hills LA.
But it's December the 24th
And I am longing to be up North.

Sounds to me like it's based somewhere that doesn't get snow.

Re: "White Christmas" Got Me Thinking

I had plenty of white christmas's as a child, so I still get that special feeling when I hear that song and others such as 'Walking in a winter wonderland' without having to deal with the problems that snow brings to adults.

Global warming means that I didn't need to move south to avoid snow, just stayed put and let the warm climates come to me

Ask the people in Denver what they think of global warming.

Problems of snow??? There is no such thing. I have been shoveling snow for a few days now. 2 big blizzards in the past 2 months and other snows on top of it. Guess what... I would not move to another area if you paid me (unless you paid me a lot ) Colorado is by far the most beautiful place around. BTW when I was shoveling yesterday I was in a t-shirt and jeans, same thing I wear everyday.

I didn't mean to suggest that I approve of global warming, although I realise that my post sounds that way. I would much prefer it if the climate was to stay the same as it has been for the last 100 years or so. I hate the heat we get hear in the sumer now, and the ocassional fall of snow would not be too bad

John
ps what do the people in Denver (I don't know any) think of global warming?

Re: "White Christmas" Got Me Thinking

Best Christmas song ever by the Nitty Gritty Dirt band.

Looking out the window of this hollywood hotel,
Youd never know that it was christmas eve.
The billboards and the neon took the place of silver bells,
And the temperature is 84 degrees.
I can hear the traffic on the crowded strip below
As the palm trees poke their heads above the scene
Theres not a single reindeer and it hardly ever snows,
And santa drives a rolls royce limosine.

But all along the rockies you can feel it in the air
From telluride to boulder down below
The closest thing to heaven on this planet anywhere
Is a quiet christmas morning in the colorado snow

I remember christmases when I was just a boy
In the morning I would run to see the tree.
And the carolers on the hillside sang their songs of christmas joy
Well, I always thought they sang them just for me.
Now the sun is setting in the california sky
And I cant find the spirit anywhere
So I think its time for me to tell los angeles goodbye
Im going back home toook for christmas there

But all along the rockies you can feel it in the air
From telluride to boulder down below
The closest thing to heaven on this planet anywhere
Is a quiet christmas morning in the colorado snow

Re: "White Christmas" Got Me Thinking

If I want a 'White Christmas' I'll go visit it somewhere. When I'm forced into it, I always fly home with my shorts and T-shirt under the long clothes and my flipflops in my carry-on.

Anybody looking for a house in Colorado Springs? We spoke to two errant Flordarians yesterday and they're on their way back after a few years of the white stuff.
