Re: What's The Cheapest You Have Paid For Gas? Sorry Kids...

Didn’t pay it but pumped it at dads station, 17.9 per gallon.

When I got old enough to drive, 21.9 per gallon.

I remember during the mid ‘70’s embargo——the pumps did not read over $1.00, had to sell by the 1/2 gallon. Went as high as 75 per 1/2 gallon.

1999 for me too. $.93 in Alaska. Then again, I was making $7 an hour.

Re: What's The Cheapest You Have Paid For Gas? Sorry Kids...

My first real job was pumping gas in 1978. Gas was already high, and the station was on the interstate, so higher still. Regular gas was .59 and high test was .79 , by the time I got my drivers license gas was in the $1.69 range .
The good thing was , you could buy 60’s and 70’s luxo-barges cheap .
The bad thing was you couldn’t afford to drive them much .

So the cheapest I ever paid for gas was .69 in 1999 in South Carolina on my way to Texas. After 6 months in Texas gas shot up again and it was about $1.49 on the return trip

.199 and with 8 gallons or more you would get a piece of silverware, a glass or a piece of flatware plus you never had to leave the car................

19 point nine a gallon.

I sold it at that.

Was having a gas war with the Texaco station across the street.

He couldn't compete with Sunoco 190.

When I started buying gas green stamps were done. However, I do remember them well.

I remember paying about .55/US gal.
Year? Around 1976-77.
I started driving long before I had a license so I didn't care about price. I just needed to put gas back in the parents car before they noticed it was gone.

What I would give for those prices today.

The give aways were over when I started driving....but here goes:

Mowing yards, 39.9 in 1973

Motorcycle, 45.9 in 1975

Driving a pick-up in 1976 54.9

And these were full service.

A self serve opened in 77, and it had gas at 49.9 and full service up town was 64.9. I worked part time at the full service. It was a Texaco. Also the local tractor mechanic and welding shop, bus terminal, and freight depot. The gas wars cranked up and they quit selling gas....they said they could not sell it for less then it cost and they were not going to pay to lose money with self serve.

When I was a kid, the Sinclair gave away dishes and plastic dinosaurs. Texaco gave S&H Green Stamps. Conoco gave away glass sets. The grocery stores gave away stamps and dishes and there were others that I don't remember....but self serve gas and the Embargo brought those days to an end.

My buddy runs the Conoco in town, and he and his wife run it alone...he mechanics and tunes vehicles (dyno tuning) and they offer the only full service around. Customers who need it or want it pull in and honk, and they turn the preset pump on and the price reads like .30 more a gallon. You would be surprised at how many old people gladly and willingly pay for full serve. Check oil, tires, wash the windshields...the works.

I do miss some of the class of the old days.

Re: What's The Cheapest You Have Paid For Gas? Sorry Kids...

When I started driving regular was about .30.
When I was a kid, there were "Save" stations and I remember .18 and depending on the station, free glass or S&H green stamps.

I remember going to the S&H store to trade in the stamps.

How about Plaid Stamps? I remember counting out both the S&H and Plaids from the book. One dollar purchase got you 10 stamps.

Re: What's The Cheapest You Have Paid For Gas? Sorry Kids...

Kind of a side note:

In the 70s, farm gas (no taxes) was .19 no decimal anything....just 19 cents a gallon.

Diesel was 29.9 for a long, long time...farm diesel was .25

Propane straight from the gas plant here was a nickle. And I would guess half the trucks in the country burned propane...about the only way you could afford a Chevy 454 or Ford 460...even when gas was cheap.

In Enid, 20 miles away, they had the Champlin refinery, and they sold "raw gasoline", meaning no additives, non rated...meaning no octain boosters, no lead added, no detergents....straight gasoline....true "no lead" fuel....and lots of guys bought that gas for 15 cents or so....I remember a farmer filling drums for $10.....Combine fuel.

The EPA stopped that in 1975.......probably a good thing...but it all ended in the mid 70s.
