What To Study To Become A Contractor And Own My Own Business

hi i am new to this forum and i have a couple questions about education. i was just wondering what everyone went to college for to become a self employed contractor. im having a difficult decision deciding if i should learn construction in an apprenticeship then go to college, or if i should join the navy seabees (construction workers for the navy) then go to college. I also dont know what to study in college. I'm thinking construction management but it seems like they only teach you how to run a business and not how to actually build stuff. Thanks

You are talking about two entirely different skills that must be learned---

One is the business manager/operator
'
Second is the tradesman----

A good manager/operator can hire the skilled trades man---

Few tradesmen could hire a manager/ operator---

So first and foremost, learn the basics of running a company---
Planning----book keeping----sales----employee training and management----

Next--pick a trade if you like to work with your hands----and you are in about the best shape you can for starting a business---if you have the proper mix of risk taking--self sacrifice and drive----good luck---Mike-----

I would have posted 6 thanks to Griz if I could have.

Let me add, all those business things that they teach you, you really do need to know, they will be critical to your success. Of course you could learn them outside school but school can be a good option. BUT, they will not teach you how to own/operate your own business. They won't teach you to be dedicated, to go when others say stop, to get up early and work late to insure the works gets done, to insure the materials are there, to insure the subs are properly scheduled, to insure the paperwork is properly done, to insure your own guys are doing their jobs, to insure the customer is satisfied, ......

Those are things that either are or are not in your gut. No one can put them there for you, no one can take them away if they are there.

All three of these guys are dead on.

You also have to be willing to make mistakes and learn from them. I know that this sounds like a cliche, but it's really true. Don't allow your pride and ego get in the way. I have had to learn this the hard way several times over the years.

Do not go to the Navy Seabees to learn your trade. If you want to serve your country, travel the world and sow your wild oats and while your at it get a GI bill then go head. If you can afford collage go to school learn business and then learn the trade from the ground up.

Studying the bottom of a Jack bottle will be about as effective as going to school to learn how to run a business.

Oh, and at least you will have gotten what you paid for.

I signed up to be a navy CB- I changed my mind right before I was to ship out to boot- if you want to pack an assault riffle along with your nail bags than the construction battalion is for you The prospect of rebuilding Iraqi housing projects doesn't really appeal to me but whatever floats yur boat!

I went to a trade school, one of the kids in my class was a seabee. Knew absolutely nothing about proper construction. He ended up failing out
