What Other Types Of Businesses Have You Owned?

I've seen many and varied backstories from users on here. Always enjoy hearing stories of what others have gotten themselves into.

Since opening the bar 3 years ago, I am now the proud owner of two, count em, two small businesses. Let's be real though, I don't do anything for the bar anymore except drink there.

What other businesses have you guys owned? Why'd you leave? Have fun while you did it?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Re: What Other Types Of Businesses Have You Owned?

About 20 years I started an online fishing tackle store, did that for about 3 1/2 years. I quit when it became unprofitable. It was fun while it lasted. Learned a lot, mainly that "suggested manufacturers price" is more than suggested.

After retiring and building my little retirement cabin in the woods I became bored. I bought a small farm/ranch next county over with intention of doing some organic farming. That did not pan out due to my wife's health so I do small time organic farming at my place here working the local farmers market. My snl uses the other place for hunting now. Dove season (weekends only) is nearly booked up. My only part in that is cooking the hunters BBQ lunch. One of the grand daughters will be the server. Should be fun, this is our first season so we'll see.

That sounds wonderful.

I've really been getting the urge to do something else. Maybe not a full thing, but just something else to muse about and plan while I'm working. The setup you're describing sounds exactly like what I'm thinking. A good idea in a cool location, run by reliable people that you'll have an important, but not full-on hand in. You're a genius and I hope you make a mint!

In my desperate attempt to get away from masonry I opened a mobile auto detailing business...

It was a good little gig however I made more money in masonry and it isnt as dependent upon good weather as detailing

I had a trailer with a water tank and a generator so I was completely independent and could detail basically anywhere

I earn all my money legally now. Even though the statute of limitations has long run out on my other entrepreneurial endeavors, that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Re: What Other Types Of Businesses Have You Owned?

Good grief......

While still in highschool, I was taking on welding jobs....worked a day job and built a machine shop business nights and weekends until I could go full time at 20. Partnered with a guy in a steel shop a year later....had press brakes and shears, built and brokered steel. Took a break to go fly helicopters when the crash of the economy wrecked the oil patch here in Oklahoma....got back and set up a night club, and ran a vending route with pool tables and juke boxes....plus a roadhouse.....and meantime did independent aircraft mechanic services..whatever it took.....finished college and took a few years to teach, could not get into the paycheck to paycheck thing, so back to enterprising my way forward...into construction for the second time in steel buildings, plus owned 3 semis running coast to coast....hard to keep drivers....and then back in construction, but no side lines now. I ain't pup any longer.

And along the way I bought and sold rental properties, flipped house before anyone called then flips, worked 20 hours a day, put my 2 older kids through college paid for with the proceeds of video slot machines......geez.....I guess I have always been an entrepreneur.

How was the espresso and pastry (cafe) business? A close friend of mine and his wife keep talking about doing this.

A bank? Why did you leave that business, isn't it simply creating money out of thin air?

Re: What Other Types Of Businesses Have You Owned?

When I was 14 I had a soda business.
I had a trailer on my bike and load it with ice and pop. I could fit 96 pops in the big cooler and a back up stock of about 24 warm sodas. I would sell out just about every day biking around devolopment projects asking if workers wanted pop.
The fun part was tossing sodas up to the stucco guys on scaffold. Once in a while they would miss the catch or I would screw up the toss and they would buy more.
Some times I wonder if I should have got out of the soda pop game... lol
I use to think my dad was joking when he said I was making more than some of the labors.

Nothing special, just bought a bunch of stock of a local bank when offered, kept buying and eventually wound as a fairly major shareholder. Got to know the people and they put me on the board of directors. Still involved, it's been a good deal, the stock has appreciated in value significantly and they've paid good dividends on the stock. One of my better investments.

I am going to go check it out one of these days. I am only a couple of miles West of JC. Wifey lived in Hoboken when we met.

Did the impossible burger shortage have any effect on your place?

Re: What Other Types Of Businesses Have You Owned?

Hadn't heard about it. I have zero involvement in day to day. In fact, I have zero involvement at all now that it's built, other than occasionally knocking off work early and having a few drinks if I'm in the area.

JC is great for a night out, and I humbly believe that if you're in town, our place is definitely worth a visit. Hope you enjoy.
