Re: What Dirt Bikes You Ride?

No pics.

Last time my arse bounced off a dirt bike was on a Yammahammer SC500. 1974 I think?

Awesome brute of a bike.

I am in envy of what kids can get today, and the air time they get on the current technology.

Started on a 70's DT100, she was a dream, 2 stroke enduro.
Now I'm spoiled with a fuel injected 4 stroke....with electric start. 2014 KTM 350 EXC-F. She's the apple of my eye. Just had to put her in storage for the winter

Re: What Dirt Bikes You Ride?

I had a '91 Honda CR500 from '96 till this spring. The kids normally go out riding with me these days and it was getting to be a bear to putt that thing thru the trails, kick start it 500 times a day after helping the kids out, finding a good spot to lean it against, etc..

I recently tore it all apart. Sand blasted and painted the frame. All new bearings in the motor top to bottom, bore job and piston, all new clutch components, new shift forks, soda blast and paint the cases, all new suspension bearings, steering bearings, fork refresh, clutch cable and handle, wheel bearings, newer brake calipers and master cylinders, chain and sprockets, etc....

Felt like a new bike after that. Then, I sold it! A young kid, friend of the family bought it from me. He comes along on a few riding trips a year (memorial day, labor day, one between) so I still get to take it for a rip.

I ended up buying a Polaris Sportsman 570 and a plow setup so I can do the driveway.

I attached a couple pics of the bike.

Re: What Dirt Bikes You Ride?

I never rode but had a whole boat load of friends who did.

70's early 80's, they rode Yamaha's, Husky's, seems like there were Suzuki's and several Bultacos.

Wild & wolley days for sure....

White/CZ (loved that leather strap across the tank), Maico - OMG MAICO!!!

Hodaka Kombat Wombat (you could buy just the engine/tranny and build your own) for the little fellers...

Re: What Dirt Bikes You Ride?

I'm old school. 1983 Husqvarna XC 500. Last of the air cooled, 2 stroke, 6 speed, 100 mph rocket. I had the aluminum tank polished, new seat upholstery. I did some electrical work for a neighbor, he kept avoiding me about the payment ($300). One day I saw his gate open and went in and said "if you can't pay me, just give me that old motorcycle" he said OK, I took it. Had to get a replacement title, 1 new tire, clutch cable, welded the muffler and dumped some in some pre-mix 50:1 racing fuel. Been riding it ever since. Before that I rode Husqvarna XC250, Bultaco Pursang 125 and 250.

Re: What Dirt Bikes You Ride?

Haven't ridden a two wheeler since the early 90s when my Yz 125 was a blast.

Been on four wheelers ever since. Currently have two Polaris Predator 500s. One is a Troy Lee edition that is near mint with a few mods. The other is a basket case project that I picked up and haven't had time to go through.

Don't ride that often, but when I do it's a blast. Have a good buddy that has a Yamaha Raptor 660 and a couple of older Blasters that we let the kids ride. I'd rather spend a day in the mud that way than at a spa...

That's badass. You gotta be a man to throw a leg over a two stroke 500. Power band = hold the [email protected]#k on! My cousin built a nice Yamaha XT out of an old frame, a 660 Raptor motor, and some USD forks and shock from a newer CR 500. One hell of a thumper but doesn't quite have the pucker factor of a big inch smoker lol.

Re: What Dirt Bikes You Ride?

Dad picked it up out of the mud and rebuilt it. First "big" bike I rode, I think I was 9 or 10, could barley touch the ground and entirely to fast for 9-10 year old. Most of my friends were riding KX/RM 80's and one older boy had a RM 125.

He pick up an little newer KE 100.

Re: What Dirt Bikes You Ride?

It's fairly simple........

I entered a lot of races (about 50/yr), and won a lot of races. The ones I didn't win, I placed high. I almost always finished. Our area had about a dozen tracks with good turnouts. That made for lots of points. I ended up with more points than anyone else, and hence plaques. That happened after about two years of racing.

I Started out racing an old 250 Bultaco enduro. Broke my left arm on that one. A little later I rode a worn out 175 Bultaco, that was fast, but near impossible to keep together. Next ride was another used 250 CZ that was very fast, & reliable, with very good success from first race on. Later upgraded to a new 250CZ, & won plaques that year. Later was sponsored by Moto East (East Cincinnati Yamaha shop) & started riding pro races. Eventually I worked up to national #46 pro. I scored top 20 points in the 74 Nationals that year, with a 4th place finish in one race. I always qualified for National mains, & always finished. For kicks I rode a 250CZ Falta for a while in local races, & later an RM250. Once I married, I just couldn't get serious enough to compete.

I could elaborate, but what's the point? I used to have ton's of picts, but can't seem to find right now. Most of the picts were by two of my brothers, & I don't have.

As far as being humble, it's a lot like that Tony Romo commercial...I dwell on the past!

Oh I understand. I have pics, but they're on film, and in boxes & albums I've not seen in decades.

Typical me, I have many more of other people than I do of myself.

Shame too, because I'm a good lookin guy!

85 Honda XR350, $1300 was a chit ton of money in 1990 when you are making $4.25/hr after school. Still got that bike, love it dearly but most of the time I'm throwing the leg over the 4-wheeler.
