Did 10 years as a Volunteer Fireman...

The $2.50/call we got from the Fire Dist. went into the beer fund.

Way back in the day when you could have beer in the Fire House...

Re: Volunteer Fire Fighter Thread

Few years back a high school girl was riding along as a junior firefighter, she was killed when his drunk ass rolled the fire truck. There is very little tolerance for alcohol here now. Better hope your house burns down on a work night cause if it's a hot summer Saturday, nobody is going to answer their pager.

Re: Volunteer Fire Fighter Thread

Texas probably has the same rules. We break a lot of rules, like custom building our brush gaurds on the grass trucks so we can ride on it while fighting fire. Hard to tell a man he can't drink a beer after a work day at the fire hall when you ain't paying him. I'd tell them to keep my check

Ours might be the most backwood redneck VFD anywhere, and we are proud of our dept. We do all maintenance in house, build the Kaisers we use for grass trucks. No frills kind of place

Got to use judgement. We have stopped our own guys from going out on calls many times.

All went well, we're burnin off the trash, last year someone left a 4" mortar in one of the boxes and threw it in the fire- had to dive under an engine when it went off

Re: Volunteer Fire Fighter Thread

Guys not permitted out happened a few times.

The beer issue was an insurance liability thing with the board of directors. For a number of years we kept beer in the Fire House fridge & drank it on the guys property next door...

AFAIK beer is not permitted in the FH now days...

Re: Volunteer Fire Fighter Thread

The department in the next town over had a guy get killed from bein ran over by the engine as it was leaving the station, I guess the driver was drunk and ran over the guy that opened the door. This was 15-20 years ago.

Yep. Got to be responsible.

To be clear, I ain't saying we hang around up there and get hammered ( often). We always have party's available to respond. I don't get hammered in public, my wife says its "not becoming" whatever that means. Lol. I don't drink nearly as much as I'd like.

Re: Volunteer Fire Fighter Thread

It's been a full week of fireworks between Canada Day and 4th of July, fortunately no calls.

Our dept is set up as a fire dept and firemans association. All of our "social" events are done under the umbrella of the association, (to protect the innocent)

After that, fire calls, prevention, training, we're on the clock as the most poorly paid township employees.

I think what she may have said
is if you get drunk in public you'll not becoming home.
