I see a business opportunity there. Salt a car and send it through the moose wash.

Re: Totally Random Thoughts...

Yesterday I heard a crash outside. The roads were icy and an old gal from across the street slid into the neighbor cedar fence. When I got there she was trying to pull a 2x4 from her windshield. It grazed her arm, she showed me the mossy mud streak on her sleeve.

I pulled it out, had a bit of trouble though because a nail was sticking out the end. I'm so glad I didn't encounter a 2x4 in a face. Her too.

I like to bring a tampon to the job site and when guys are working and not really paying attention, I say, "hey can you hold this for me" and they reach out to get what I'm handing them, and before they know what it is they are already holding it. Then they are standing there looking at a tampon in their hand and everyone is laughing at them. Its stupid but for some reason it never gets old and it always makes everyone laugh.

It kinda becomes a game... it gets passed around all day.. like hot potato lol, no matter how many times someone sees it passed to another, they still fall for it.

The trick is just to do it at the most unsuspecting time, like if someone asks you to pass them a tool or a lighter or cigarette.

We had one get passed around for 2 weeks before on the same job.

Dumb contractor games.

And no guy thought to pass you a condom?... Must be afraid of sexual harassment...

Weird how that only seems to work one way...

Do you guys (as a prime contractor) ever hop onto your sub's crew if they're short a guy to help finish their part of your build if the schedule is in jeopardy?

I used to do what was necessary to keep my subs schedules. Pick up materials. Pull wire. Whatever was necessary to keep things rolling.

Even as the mason contractor, we will jump in and help the other subs (on residential mostly, not so much on commercial).

We will jump in there and help others. Weve helped several of our GC's frame...and since the lift on the job is usually mine...We are always setting up sheeting, shingles, carpenters, unloading trucks, whatever needs to be done.

....And when I need extra help, there's one GC that will let me use his helpers as much as I need,

Same here! I'll help anyone that asks ..Or even If they don't .
If I see a situation where It looks like they need a hand ? I'll jump I'll there!

A few years ago a builder that was short a hand stopped by the house I was on and asked If I could help him and his helper set a wall down the street I was working on... The wall was like 50' long ..Just three guys ! You framers earn you keep !!! That's fer sho!!

I'll drop by to check on my hangers sometimes.. and If they're scrapping out the house I'll jump in and help them ..Then help the boys load the tools ..

But when It comes to me having to do the job of the G/C or the subs before me? Without being nicely ask to ! That's when It's gonna cost somebody.

That's great. We'll jump in when we need to but I wondered if anyone else did.

For me, my livelihood was on the line. I was the GC and the owner of the company. I was the guy that sold the job, and unless I performed well, I wouldn't get additional work or referrals. I think on CT you'll find a lot of similar situations - company owner/GCs, all of whom take pride in their work and their jobs and who are willing to do what is necessary to make the job happen. When your reputation and future work is on the line, I think it makes the choice easy to do what is necessary to stay on track.
