Maybe you should have their supplier quote your material then.

If I have competing bids I'm usually unaware these are younger people I've worked for. I've worked for the stepmom for 20 plus years just did a 20k bedroom remodel for her.

When she text me with the numbers my response was "What?" She responded "Well we changed from a full bath to half bath and got a discount for being a referral."

I responded with "31 years all my business has been referrals so does that mean every one of my customers get a discount?" LOL

The only thing I'll give them is they plan on moving in 3 years or so probably will take the lowest bid. But as I told them "That has no bearing on my price if you want cheap or cut corners then I'm not suitable for this project."

This one surprised me it's been a long time since I've been underbid so badly and I'm not accustomed to doing cheap/low cost I don't think I'm even capable of doing so I'd probably get physically ill.

Yep. Just got outbid on a window job. My cost for windows was around 3200. They bid 4,500 complete.

I'm thinking they must be using cheap Cascade windows or maybe Viking.

The bummer part is I didn't even get the chance to compete. I would have liked to see what windows he got.

May have to drive by this week and see.

It doesn't sound like you didn't bid the same work, maybe had she let you quote the 1/2 bath you'd be a little closer on price.

I hate when I lose a job and find later that the other guy changed the scope of work, or materials from what I quoted on the job.

Maybe you should have told her, "A half bath is 1/2 price, but since you already signed with the other guy....."

Sometimes the difference between paying your guys what they're worth versus competing with those who are using workers who don't need to make as much here, because it's worth much more where they're from and they're not paying any loaded costs for them...

And/Or are low-bidder, Change Order artists...

I'm exactly this way. I basically can't do cheap work. I can't do sub-par even if I try. So if people tell me they want something that's less than near perfect I just tell them sorry.

I've gotten a couple jobs asking to see the other guys quote. I tell them black out the price and the company name if you like. Almost always they are missing something.
The last one was a fence. The other estimate was a foot shorter, 3.5 inch posts, and no stain.

Re: Things You Love & Hate

Finished up all the planning for turning our shop into our headquarters complex. This is the house I grew up in. Bittersweet to tear it down to build an office building for growing staff and a parking lot, supposed to have an excavator here around the 25th to wreck it. A demo contractor can demo and haul it off cheaper than I can pay for the trash. LOL

Hate to spend the cash but remodeling the shop and making 600 as ft into a selections room, rock and board and batten on the outside.

A lot of good memories in that thousand square feet. Hell of a good childhood.

On to the next chapter

Nah, it's on a monolithic slab. It's already gutted to the studs on the inside. I'm going to take those windows out to save. It's been rented out for number of years since the company took it over from my dad. It was not in great shape.
