Waaay back when, my parents had a hard-wired security system installed.

Maybe 5 years later one of the keypads went south. I called the company that installed it and they came out and replaced it.

My Mom gets the bill for $400 or so. I was flabbergasted. The internet was just getting its feet and I researched and found a company in N.J that had the exact keypad for $29.00.

I knew the owner of the company and called him with my findings...that how in hell can he sleep at night charging $300 for a part that retailed to me for $29 and another $100 for labor that took literally 10 minutes.

He was insulted that I would question his prices and how wrong it was that I could by the same stuff he sells on the internet at such a reduced price.

I said... get used to it.

He asked if I wanted them to come out and take the unit out and call it even.

"Damn right I do". They did....and they are no longer in business.

I want everyone to make a profit. Taking advantage of a little old lady is a different story.

Yeah it burns my ass too, if they are ripping them off. Did 400 include trip and labor?

The one that I don't know how they stay in business is plumbing and lighting fixture stores. They have significant over head just eight he showroom and personnel

Yup.

What makes it even worse, she paid a monthly monitoring fee that was pretty outrageous at the time.

Including a trip charge and labor I could see 175 - 250, most sparkies/plumbers/hvac/security here are going to get 75 to $125 service fee if they're any good, usually first hour including travel included. I don't know how the electricians mark up their materials, or the plumbers or HVAC guy, I don't really care it's pretty consistent, but I would bet my security guy would double that thermostat to 60 bucks, which 30 bucks o&p ain't bad including warranty

Our service call fee gets a knock on your door. Clock starts running when we come in.

Not much profit in selling most residential electrical supplies

I think that's fair, service call Fee. We actually do one as well for existing customers, it's just tacked on to whatever the labor actually is. So I guess the same the way you do it.

Permit, ****er, framing package, framing labor, plumbing package, doesn't really matter to me, I'll get the same markup.

I'm surprised the cadmium cell even went bad. Usually all you have to do is wipe them off and their good to go.

Re: Things I Hate (2)

They basically lost a few accounts. I'm just going to stock all the usual consumables, plus oil pump, cad cell, control electronics, igniter, etc.

Plus buy an ash vacuum.

Personally, I don't want to be messing around with oil burners, but a single call split out as $255 for a clean, $230 for replacing the cad cell, $380 for replacing the controller. Probably $175 in parts at home depot (yep, they sell all that locally), plus an hour of time.

Sure charge $100 call out, double the parts, but don't tack on $400 for an hour.

They'll make money hand over fist with their franchise model, if they can keep customers.

I wasn't there, but normally it would just get cleaned like you say. They last a very long time.

More and more service companies are using menu pricing. Parts and labor aren't broken out, it's one item, standard price.

I've started a turn away fee as well. If I show up and am turned away for what ever reason, no access, person not home, site not ready they incur a turn away fee.

How do you get them to pay if they are not there? Sending them a bill in the mail without them signing or agreeing to anything is going to be hard to collect.

If there was an agreement via email I'd file a ****ing lien if it was in the agreement. Privileged MF will be paying additional for my time to file the lien and interest to if he ever wants to sell

So a call out fee, and a turn away fee?
