Fire Chief is a political position. The city manager will remove them if they don't go with the program.

10% grade for new public roads is the rule here. Old roads are exempt.

Houses with steep drives or no clearance to make the turn in here they may plan on fighting it from the street as long as the street is close enough.

All I got to say, local FD/emergency med Techs gave me a ride a few weeks back, and I'm damned glad they did.

I still got a deep bruise on my hand from the head fella named Patrick - he was quite the screamer - when he tried to start the IV.

But I damned sure can overlook that.

Probably. We've kept the hippies out of any kind of political positions here, they either have a job or have a business that they want to be successful. I don't think many of us mind twisting arms. We prove that when they tried to get a tree ordinance. Our tree ordinance basically says we can cut down whatever the f*** we want. LOL

We have separate ambulance services here, the fire departments only give rides to cats and Dalmatians.

And high school girls.

I feel for you. I know drives with 15% grade that I've never heard if any car or truck having a problem on. Winter ice storms are a different situation.

So I’m glad your local fire department is an exception to the rule, I’m sure there are a few others (very few) but I stand by my original statement that nationally fire departments are a bigger financial burden than they’re worth. I felt this way before I found out about this new driveway rule, this just reinforces it.

Odd set up, sounds union.

Everything here has combined fire and rescue. Most calls are for vehicle accidents, and they roll a rescue and a pumper.

A few people here have this condition:

“The suit says the girl suffered a concussion as a child which caused a slight condition that causes her to have “deep-seated respect for authority figures, and her naivety. Jane had virtually no capacity to resist the advances proposed by Drake and Bell.”

All depends on the area in our state.

And depends on situation too. First Responders could choose to call for an independent transport.

Re: Things I Hate (2)

This could be a union push to avoid slippery winter drives. If it is, it will show up up here in the union FD areas.

One solution is to modify the set back in the zoning code to make fighting from the street possible. Maybe local government can be pressured, maybe not. One thing is for sure, they took away buildability, they should be willing to restore some of that value.

Re: Things I Hate (2)

I've said this several times already in other threads but anyway:

Michigan is currently in a NIMBY phase - as are many other states.

All the Johnny Come Latelys buy a new McMini in a freshly converted cornfield, then turn around and want to keep everyone else from doing what they just did.

Thus, creative gubmints invent wetlands where previously there were none (my place for example), new grades on already platted, approved and taxed empty lots - community sewage plants where before septic fields were fine, well flow standards that cannot be met, etc.

And that is just Step 1. There's the fallout which follows, meaning taxes must rise to meet increasing costs on a stagnant housing base.

Means less money to spend for "necessities", so less is divied out to schools and roads, because the "essentials" like law enforcement and fire protection/emergency response - which factually are critical - have to be funded first and foremost.

But it becomes a spiral.

And this has happened over and over, generation after generation.

I think it's the other way around. Big cities and liberal areas have entitled depts, 70% of fired delta I bet are good. Texas A&M fire school I met lots of fire fighters from rural areas - which is the majority of fire depts

Re: Things I Hate (2)

So what would be your plan, Johnson, for Wildland fires, brush fires Etc? We had one barely get out of control with seven trucks on scene and ended up claiming 38 homes and thousands and thousands of acres and burn for 11 days. Yeah they don't really earn their money though, LOL.

If there was no fire department during the Bastrop fires or Labor Day fires just in this little rural area it would have cost a billion dollars worth of damage or more in addition to what it already cost.

Re: Things I Hate (2)

Who would you get to work wrecks? Who would you get to do Swift water rescue during floods? These are legitimate questions, most of a fire department job has nothing to do with putting out fires. I don't see a bunch of newbie do-gooders without any training standing in the middle of a 70 mile-an-hour Highway putting out a car fire and dragging dead bodies out and putting them in a wagon. LOL

Ok but budgets still can’t be virtually unlimited. You keep ignoring that aspect and once they migrate from fire and rescue to residential construction they’ve overstepped their bounds.

Look man you love big government when it comes to your pet projects I hate all big government, we just have to agree to disagree. Wildfires burning down houses??? That’s why they sell insurance. We spend billions and billions more on fire departments than they save in houses. You don’t need a $15 million dollar building to perform a river rescue.

Sounds like your local fire depts are like my local police depts.

I think I posted about all the phk-ups in the other thread.

In my county, though, we have 1 paid dept, and 42 volunteer depts. We have a Technical Rescue Team, A search and rescue team, and a swift-water rescue team.

All volunteer. They don't just volunteer their time, but they buy their own equipment as well.

And probably 90% or more of what they do is not fire-fighting, but scraping mangled, bloody bodies of out-of-town douchebags who refuse to dry sober and slowly, off of local highways in the middle of the night.

I'm an EMT and former VFF, and I can tell you with absolute certainty, that there is a great percentage of people in this country who cannot physically handle the blood and guts.

Even for those of us who can, it still takes it's toll.

If you're getting paid, fine, it's your job. You're not a hero.

But what about all the thousands of volunteers who don't have to do it, but do it anyway, and the only payback is sleepless nights, missed time with family, and a whole bunch of $#!t you'll never be able to un-see or un-know?

Re: Things I Hate (2)

I agree with you about the stupidity.

But we have a bloated bureaucratic society, where everyone is helpless and expects "the government" to do something about EVERYTHING for them.

100 years ago, farmers fought their own fires.

Now, everyone wants to move an hour into the "country", and still have emergency medical services (along with everything else) at their finger tips.

So the counties start making rules about access. PITA, yes.

Or people could just take care of their own $#!T.

I'm going through this Bull$#it right now with California CARB rules and Transportation Regulations. It's enough to make you want to see a boat full of bureaucrats sinking 200 miles from land.

I’m not attacking individual volunteer firemen, I’m attacking fire departments and those who “sleep” with them.
