I won't sell stuff on Craigslist anymore. Not worth dealing with.

Re: Things I Hate

Part of selling, online or in person, is realizing that a man is a man, and a man has to feel like he's got something.

I learned this when trying to sell some tires several years back. Had them up at a fair price and they weren't moving. I have at least three solid bites and the back and forth went exactly like Stano described. They want $5 but I wasn't budging.
They were A/T tires, so I pulled them off the market for spring and summer then relisted them the next fall. This time I upped the price by $50. Got a bite, let myself get haggled down the $50, then sold the tires to a guy that was real happy with the tires and the fact that he got a little something off. Something to tell his buddies or his wife. He got a great deal(actually was a great deal, the fake $50 discount was icing on the cake), I moved my tires.
Lesson learned.

I almost sold a truck on CL last month. We were a few hundred apart, which was a great enough gap that I passed on the sale, but the guy was a serious buyer, showed up prepared to purchase, and we shook hands and were grateful that even though the deal didn't get done, we weren't wasting each others time.

I'm still down with CL.

Re: Things I Hate

I've had nothing but good luck so far selling on Craigslist. I haven't done it often and being in business many years has sharpened my radar for nuts. Some people are just looking for a decent used item and will pay a decent price for it.

A customer gave me a set of new wheels to get rid of, sold them for $300. The guy was a mechanic and knew what he was looking for. A propane tank I was going to give away sold for $70. The gas shop recommended it, I didn't even think about it.

Re: Things I Hate

I sold a broke down BMW that wouldn't start on CL. Thought I was getting jerked around when the guy kept saying he was running late. But the guy showed up, with a flat bed and cash. It was dark by the time he got there, and he didn't even care to look at the car. Couple Jamaicans from Long Island. Whole thing was weird, but I moved a car that wouldn't run in 10 hours.

Re: Things I Hate

My favorite sale was unloading a K1 heater in the dead of winter. It was like maybe 10 degrees the day I sold it.
Met this dude in Montclair. He was late, which pissed me off. No worries, grabbed breakfast with the wife.
Guy finally calls, apologizes for his lateness. Turns out he's meeting me at his jobsite. He's tiling a floor in a rental that doesn't have power. He's got a generator for lighting and mixers, but no heat. He tells me all of this, then is dumb enough to try to haggle with me on the price of the heater.
Bro, you just told me that your entire operation is hanging on you purchasing this heater, RIGHT NOW. He had guys standing there waiting to work.
I should have charged him an extra hundred just to teach him a lesson on supply and demand.
Whatever. Bought the heater for $200 in the summer. Used it for two winters. Sold it for $250 in the dead of winter. Works for me.

Too many weirdos for me. At this point I'll just throw something away or donate it before dealing with weirdos. Or use a more regulated service like eBay where someone isn't going to ask me if I'd be willing to trade my car for a guitar and an amp.

Re: Things I Hate

My uncle's exwife's uncle (mid 60s) found help on CL. They were demoing a house. They ended up with a disagreement on pay and the uncle ended up stuffed down the chimney with other debris piled on top of him; died there. Need to use the streetsmarts when dealing with public.

I'll have guys from CL come and pick up scap occasionally. It's wise to keep the goodies (tools, etc.) laying around hidden.

Damn, that's awful.

Met a lot of decent dudes scrapping from CL. You put a stove up and it's gone minutes after posting.
One time I even got out of hiring a helper on a kitchen job by putting the old fridge, range, and sink up on CL. I had a "helper" there within the hour who helped me load it out of the house and onto his truck. He was stoked to get the scrap, I was stoked to have that crap out of my way without having to pay. Everybody wins!

They must be working for pennies. I took down three display rakes for a nation mattress company, huge steel beam and racks. 750lbs worth. I charged them plenty but thought I'd make a mint off of the steel at the recycle yard. $22 isn't a mint.

And before anyone knew what was happening, you drove off with the car, right?

Offer it some really cool hiking boots and a trip to a cool mountain trail. That would work for our resident Cricket.

Re: Things I Hate

Dealing with tweaker. Showed up at a building a client has for sale. All I was doing was clean out up a small oil spot and grab an empty barrel.

Show up and the realtor box is broke open. Now through owner is on the way and the cops need to clear the building. Then we need to change all the locks we just changed.

And for those who think I'm a sissy, it's a big warehouse/office. Lots of places to hide. I usually send my dog in first just in case. He's not here, and if anything has been messed with we need a police report anyway.

Add to my other dog is sick and needs to be at the vet in a couple hours, it's a bit of a crap day.
