Re: Things I Hate

A good contractor desk guy can make all the difference. Our guy brought us something we needed on a site. 250 km away. On his day off.

"Excuse me...could you tell me where the widgets are?"

"I'm sorry, this isn't my department"

"You should probably get back to your department because I'm sure someone there is waiting for assistance".

I get the "not my dept" quite often. I've started replying this way.

This is getting old. Just got a text by the HO telling me not to deliver the remaining cabs because the drywall is in disrepair and there isn't room for the rest of the cabinets.

I was going to deliver them tomorrow and then do the install on Thurs/Fri.

Guess that's not happening.

On the other hand, I can be the bitcher instead of the bitchee

Re: Things I Hate

I get all the complaining about the crappy help at the box stores, but it's not all of them.

My Lowez has an awesome pro desk guy that I have bought stuff from them and picked it up at their vender.

Same thing at my Home depot. Yet I cannot get a rush from there regular venders.

Menards is a little trickier, but it has work there too for the right amount of product, and then I could return the rest.

I've seen your shop ! You've got plenty of room to store the boxes till the drywall is done ! Stop bitching!!

Re: Things I Hate

More then 6 weeks to get one small room ready for cabinets. Had to resize two window openings. Rip down a wall and resupport it so it could be a large pass through. Electrical, minimal plumbing, some vacuum lines, lighting in the ceilings, drywall and paint.

I am always longer then it takes to revamp a room. I've been longer them making a new addition. This is one of the first times I've been ready so much earlier then the room.

According to the GC it might still be happening today.

Re: Things I Hate

Why not deliver them to the GCs shop. His foul up his problem. He can then deliver them to the home and you can install them at your leisure or he can pay someone else to install and still give you something for your lost profit.

Seems like you found a few looser GC's the last month or so

They are. I'm sure they feel as I do. Let just get this thing wrapped up. He has a life to go on and I have other jobs I need to start up.

Our doors are now 2 1/2 weeks late. It is holding up every other trade. We were going to dump the rep we were using but now I think the boss is pissed enough to dump the entire company.

He just called me and said the rock came yesterday . They insulated today and the inspector is coming in the morning . I'm like

My Son got out of school this week. He's gonna learn how to move sheetrock tomorrow

This is only the G/Cs third house ...So I'm calmly dealing with it ..He plans on building many more . He'll get the hang of things .

There's something he's not going to want to learn how to do.

Do they usually lean the rock against the wall in the homes you do? I see the board delivered before insulation often enough. Board is always laid on the floor, not in anyone's way

When practical, it makes more sense to lean the stuff against the wall. You're concentrating a good chunk of weight in one place; closer to the ends of the joists is better. And picking it up from flat is extra work.

Looking for a 50' 12/3 cord at Home Depot and it cost $70.👎 finding a 100' spool of 12/3 SO wire at the depot for $100. 👍🏻. Spending almost $50 on plugs to make two 50' extension cords. 👎.

I understand that it's more work for sure, but insulation and inspection are often done in a day, maybe 2. The convenience of being able to get the boarders in the next morning is pretty big

Yes it is, but as always we run into what's the best practice vs the actual job circumstances. I'm used to working with a small crew that does it all; we can insulate and stay busy with other stuff for a couple of days before hanging. Mass production with subs is another story.
