I do both of those things.

If I don't already know someone or have a referral for what I need, I just go down the line in the phone book till someone answers.

I hate waiting around for return calls.

I call back local looking calls but don't like it.

I've been marking the red area up with different colored sharpies each day to see if it's still spreading. It kept spreading so I went back in. I was really expecting to get admitted today, but I'm glad to not be.

Ended up getting a shot that will clear up nearly every STD (and nearly every infection).

I know what you mean about the elbow sack. It feels like I've got a boob hanging off the bottom of my elbow.

Re: Things I Hate

When you text a client to find out when they are coming by the shop and you know it's going to be late afternoon. And they text back we'll be there in 1/2 hour. And you haven't done anything to prepare for the color match session that they are coming by for.

And then they show up and you rushed around making everything clean and getting samples ready for color application and they decide on a clear coat over cherry.

But at least the end result is clear coat on cherry, that nice.

When you take your truck tj the dealership for some minor work (replace one tire, change oil) and it takes an hour and a half (and counting!).

My own handwriting. I have gotten so used to the computer that my site written proposals are an embarrassment.
Have to wonder with all if the technology if script will become obsolete soon.

Most schools dont even teach kids cursive writing anymore. Just regular print. They say its a waste of time and obsolete because of technology.

I also hate when someone's lack of planning now becomes my emergency. And even worse I'm to nice to say no.

I hate having to be the bad guy and "make a business decision. .."

I'll do everything I can to be nice, but sometimes you just have to have that come to jesus meeting with employees.

Never let someone confuse kindness with weakness: they are total different things. Sometimes, some people, need the fact reiterated.

Just tell them there's a perfect job for them, and this ain't it. Seriously, if they aren't going to work out, they need to be finding a job where they can have some long term prospects.

I have never had that problem

I feel like i am a GOOD guy, not necessarily nice, although i think im generally a nice guy if you arent a douche bag.

I do a lot of things other employers think are a no no, like loan my men money, be one of the guys, ect....

I call BS. I havent seen many crews as well run as mine, a lot to do with the men on it, but also i believe my managerial skills.

I would guess you are " nice " in the wrong ways. I have employed good friends and never had an issue with them stepping out of line on site. Friday at lunch or having a beer at company cook out? No problem. Tell me all the reasons im a jerk, i am not sensitive.

On site, if i say its gonna rain and its blue skies you best grab a tarp and start covering stuff up. I dont have a problem with someone voicing their opinion, say like " Hey hoss, it looks sunny". But if i say, " nah, its gonna rain", they best hop to and cover stuff up.

If they dont they get told how it is. You do how i say do or you put it on the road. You want to predict rain go get your own crew

That is an extreme example, and in all honesty, my guys would say your crazy and laugh. Nor would i abuse my position. But you get my point. In a real world situation, your word is law on the job site. If someone has a problem with that take them to the side and explain how it is. If they persist they can kick rocks. A lot of it has to do with what you dont say in my experience, but what you do.

I only bring this up because i read in another thread that your guys " mutinied". If so, send them to the house and consider my advice for your next go around. That crew is probably not " fixable "

Re: Things I Hate

That's pretty much what I did today. I had a 2 man crew dedicated to a new apartment complex with a set production rate of 1 apartment a day. I can solo one a day so I know it can be done.

They started slacking off and I held them to the production rate. I told them last week I bid the job so high that they could literally work a 20 hour day and I would still make money. If you want to slack, I'll grind you into the ground with longer hours. Then, they cried they wanted a third man on the team. So I hired a third man monday.

They still worked a 12 hour day. So today I had a meeting and laid it all on the line. I said you want shorter hours, get to work. I gave you a third man, and now if you work more than 8 hours I will fire you, period. The cry babying has to stop, and it stops today. I will not lose this client, but I will lose you guys.

They were done in 6 hours.

I try to be understanding and have set the work hours at 9-5 so they can get kids off to school etc... in the morning. I even tolerate a flexible work schedule, but at the end of the day production will be met. It's just crap when people try to take advantage of your generosity. Hell I bought pizza for the crew 2 times last week.
