Save A Whale.

For a year or two, I've been trying to reduce my plastic bag acquisition from the likes of HD and others. "I don't need a bag.....maybe I'll save a whale or something." (When cashiers are putting just a couple items in a bag, it's frickin ridiculous anyhow, isn't it?)

Maybe it'll amount to nothing, but I invite you to join me. At the very least, it's interesting to engage the cashiers and see their reactions.

I grab empty cardboard boxes instead, before they break them down.

Thanks!

(btw, their bags suck anyway.)

Not many [fish-type] whales here in central PA, but yeah, I avoid plastic bags whenever possible. Ironically, the state-owned liquor stores here use plastic for just about everything--while the state officially deplores their use.

Re: Save A Whale.

I rarely get bags when I do the weekly grocery shopping. My wife has some large totes she bought that are great for groceries. We had bags of bags in the house, it was insane.

The huge plus with those is I bag them how I want, unlike the employees who just throw stuff in without a thought. I'll stop myself from going on that rant...

I will grab a few paper bags every once in a while, I use those for recycle

But paper is bad for the environment! Use plastic, save a tree!

No more free plastic bags at any place that has food in Cali these days, can still get them at Home Cheapot and it's a valued item now.

It's funny but don't really miss them now that we're used to bringing in totes. You can still get them but they cost 10 cents but for that price they're really nice heavy duty plastic, you can pack a lot into them with no issues.

In an effort to curb plastic bag use they are soon to be illegal here and merchants will be required to charge $0.08 per paper bag

Re: Save A Whale.

Put a tote or 3 in your truck. Problem solved. It's easy once you get into the rhythm of it.
My wife and I have been militantly anti-bag for a while now. I think the absurdity of it struck me when I was buying a bottle of water and somebody put that single bottle of water in a plastic bag.
I was like, damn dude, you used to just drink out of the water fountain. Why'd you stop?
No plastic bottles, no plastic bags.

We bring our own bags to the grocery store and reuse them a few times.

Between 'Paperless offices' that seem to use more paper than before they were paperless and amazon's cardboard cartel .... Plastic bags don't make a dent in saving substantial amounts LOL

Plastic bags never made much sense to me anyway. Just tree huggers re-arranging deck chairs on the titanic (of their own making).

Most of em charge for bags now...they claim it's for environmental reasons.....but we all know what's going on...they pay 2-3 cents for a bag and sell it for 5.

Up here it's town by town, so I'll go buy in a different town if it's convenient.

Or, I'll grab one of the baskets, and take it to the car or truck that way.

If I want to see a reaction about bags, I'd ask HD to bag my lumber.

All the expensive places here charge for paper bags. Cheap places like Wal-Mart give paper bags for free.

I'll be the contrarian. I love plastic bags. Nothing like getting a paper bag in a downpour. I can carry all the groceries on one hand and we reuse them all over the house.

They are made with the waste byproducts from refining. Now those waste products will just go into the ground without ever being used.

This was being discussed in California and it was pointed out that when the new law went into effect, at 10 cents a bag it was estimated that was going to generate 300,000,000 dollars a year extra for the big grocery stores.

Re: Save A Whale.

I'm all for recycling although it has turned into a cottage industry for can pickers to roam the alleys going through the recycle containers, once in a while some really rough looking characters come down the alleys now but in any case out here there's a problem with too much recyclables and not enough demand for the product.

One thing that's a little concerning about everyone bringing in their own tote is the people with the funky tote(s). Seems like it could be a possible disease vector considering they are placed on the same place one's food is being placed.
