Re: Robin Williams

Old thread but I thought I'd give an update I just read...

Lewy body dementia...never heard of it. The article states he would probably have been locked up (mental institution??) if he had lived.

Wow.

Quote:
Lewy body dementia, the second most common type of progressive dementia after Alzheimer's disease, causes a progressive decline in mental abilities.

It may also cause visual hallucinations, which generally take the form of objects, people or animals that aren't there. This can lead to unusual behavior such as having conversations with deceased loved ones.

Another indicator of Lewy body dementia may be significant fluctuations in alertness and attention, which may include daytime drowsiness or periods of staring into space. And, like Parkinson's disease, Lewy body dementia can result in rigid muscles, slowed movement and tremors.

In Lewy body dementia, protein deposits, called Lewy bodies, develop in nerve cells in regions of your brain involved in thinking, memory and movement (motor control).

Re: Robin Williams

Anybody that knew Robin even the slightest bit - even if only 30 seconds off stage - would know he was manic.

This brain/mind of ours is so wonderful, amazing, complex, and beyond understanding.

A diagnosis of Parkinsons or ALS or MS - I've been close to several people who been through these - and the sheer terror of those diseases can overwhelm even the strongest.

That is a scary one, isn't it?

Then again, I've been doing that since age six, so that's 50 years now...

On a more serious note, it's very easy to understand why such a diagnosis could make one seek an easier exit. I've spent a lot of time at the bedside of two family members who died from dementia, and it's a hard death.

Re: Robin Williams

All of a sudden, if the story is true, it seems suicide may have been an act of kindness instead of selfishness.

With suicide, the family only has to survive a month or so of unrelenting media. With the disease, they (the family, friends, the hospital, etc) would have had 3-5 years of non-stop media harassment.

I worked at a VA hospital for 3.5 years and saw some people take years to go, sometimes deteriorating back to the baby stage with feedings and diapers. And the family going through it all.

I won't be checking out that way.

Re: Robin Williams

That article also said he had serious anxiety issues on top of the rest of it. If that was indeed the case, I think suicide wouldn't be a bad decision at all.
