Not This Again...Colorado Springs Black Forest Fire

Well, extremely dry and hot conditions have made my city a dry tinderbox again. Just 2 weeks shy of the 1 year anniversary of the Waldo Canyon Fire that destroyed 347 homes and killed 2 we have another major fire burning in our city. Pray for rain, pray for favorable wind shifts etc. Quite a few houses have already burned and the evacuation area is growing substantially as the time progresses. We also have a few other fires in our state including one near the Royal Gorge Bridge (biggest suspension bridge) down in Canon City (about an hour south/southwest). It's sad to see so much destruction to my beautiful city.

On the plus side maybe people will be a little more open to what I've been offering for years, we've done a number of decks built from 100% non combustible products, we've even got ways of building homes from 100% non combustible materials. We got push back last year even just a few months after the last fire with things like "It won't happen again" and other such statements.

I hate to see my city go through this again, breaks my heart.

Best wishes to you.
Hope you are not involved in the evacuations or fire.

Keep pushing your non-combustible materials construction.

Thanks Griz, we're not part of the evacs where we are, if it came as far as we are then it would be an awful tragedy. The list of people I know that getting evac'd is growing as they keep stretching the lines.

Soory you are having fires so early in the year down there. Thankful it has been cool and wet up so far.
Driving thur the mountains the other day and seeing all the pine beetle dead wood woods made me think of how bad a fire will be if one happens.

That sucks, Robert...

I lived just off Baptist Rd., only a few minutes up from the interstate. My family still has friends up there. That area ok? I remember there being a bunch of trees starting about 2 or 3 streets up from ours....

It was fine earlier... It might be on evacuation now. Kind of crazy how it's moving.

Official 92 houses completely destroyed, but that was noon and they even admitted that the number will go up considerably.

360 Officially completely destroyed, 15,000+ acres as of 2:00 AM today. Awful.

347 homes destroyed last year... I told my employees yesterday that I would be surprised if this fire didn't destroy even more than last year. Unfortunately I was right, I wish I was wrong.

I mean no disrespect Robert but you should really switch to wood framed decks for job security next year.

Re: Not This Again...Colorado Springs Black Forest Fire

Sorry this is happening again Robert. Was just out there last month. Visited the Royal Gorge while we were there and glad we did.

Was texting the daughter yesterday (they live in Fountain) and she said the smell of smoke was strong way down there. Fear smaller fires will be popping up from the heat and dryness and manpower will be drawn from the larger one.

Thoughts and prayers to all of you out there.

Re: Not This Again...Colorado Springs Black Forest Fire

Where are the numbers coming from?

I have a biased mis trust of the media. They reported wildly diffrent numbers than the real numbers on the wild land fires here in '11.

And the world trade centers, ect...

Coming from our sheriff, he really is doing a great job for what he is dealing with. Based on what I've seen, watched, and heard on the radio scanners those numbers sound fine if not low. Of course this was based on 2 am counts, the numbers will increase tomorrow.

Robert, I'm really sorry to hear about this news. I live in a similar area and the threat of fire wiping us out is always in the back of my mind.

We've witnessed 2 smaller fires in the last few years that started within our forest view. Luckily the wind was blowing them away from us.

I hope that you, your neighbors and friends make it through OK.

I just had to look up the black forest area, as it has been over 12 years since I was last there. I was quite young, and didn't really know many names of areas.

The Black Forest is only about 2 miles from there our home was. Granted, it is a big area. I am going to talk to my folks tonight to see if they have been talking to their friends there...

473 homes now destroyed, 2 deaths, and 30% contained.

Stupid dirt bag, low life, useless thieves are breaking into evacuated homes and stealing or vandalizing homes... I really despise these scum.

Over 500 homes destroyed, however we should be at 100% containment very soon (not to be confused with 100% extinguished).
