Re: No Sense Of Humor.......

As was mentioned up the thread the insulted salesman has to thicken up his skin. One of my family members was a really good sales person and I remember her telling us about some of the things people would say when she used to telemarket, which she did before moving up the food chain.

People would say the most outrageous or nasty things and she'd just laugh and laugh about the comments, like water off a duck's back to her, 'weed 'em out and move on ' was her philosophy and one that insulted salesman should adopt .

You nailed it in my opinion.

All of us can spot another contractor at HD without even knowing them. (Usually in a hurry, looking like a working person, and sometimes even have logos or lettering on their shirts)

When they stick these kids on the front end caps to try and drum up business, these kids tend to eventually learn to leave us contractors alone BECAUSE of reactions like CWAT described. They should teach them that before putting them out there.

I usually just avoid them by turning into another aisle, and if that's inconvenient for me, I'll shake my head no before they say a word.

None of us owe them a thing.

BTW: I was wearing our electrical contractor shirt and hat at the time. At least this way he can pick me out of a line up, or, flame my company on facebook. See how considerate I am....I'm an F....ing charitable organization

I understand. Usually that's how it goes for me too, but sometimes even if that's how it goes down, I've just had a bad day and I'm not in the mood and they happen to be in the way and found the limit to my silence, and they get it. That sucks, but that's life. Everyone has bad days sometimes...and everyone gets the release of someone else's bad day sometimes.

I'm not assuming that's what happened in this case, but it happens.

Agree about the moving with purpose comment...I try to do that, but sometimes they notice me "loafing" before I notice them "pitching".

Also if you time it right, you can throw one of your fellow customers right under the bus...swerve to the outside and you can legitimately "assume" that solar boy is talking to them and not you...don't look up, no eye contact, keep it movin....you might make it out of there.

A stern and confident "No" has always worked better than avoiding confrontation. It also shows much more respect for the person asking for the sale, they arent left wondering.

Not taking'no' for an answer is sales 101.

During a desperate time in my life, I spent 6 months selling rainbow vacuums. Gotta hear no 7 times before you hear yes.

I found it better to start a cold call with finding something they were obviously interested in & starting a conversation about that, before starting my speel. That & humor.

Like I said earlier, the OP reminds me of people here in rural MO. Being a smart ass is common & not meant to be insulting, it's a form of humor. You'd be amazed at some of the things these rough old farmers say when I show up to look at their projects. Rather than getting pissed off, or feeling insulted, I give it right back in kind. These old guys enjoy the back & forth banter & actually enjoy being insulted in a humorous manner. Had the young man came back with a witty, equally smart assed response, both men would have had a laugh.

Sales isn't for most people, it's a hard job, especially cold call sales.

No wonder millennials are pussies, they were taught to avoid conflict instead of saying no.

If you say no and mean it, a person can figure it out quickly. Or you can look down at the ground and walk quickly hoping not to make eye contact too

Re: No Sense Of Humor.......

Some quips from Youtube, to keep this thread going:

"A side note about sarcasm: That died along with wit and humor about a decade ago. The current generation simply doesn't know what it is and if you so much as kid them, they trigger. I blame the liberal parents who were too selfishly busy "making something of themselves" to raise their children with patience, love, kindness and tolerance."

"Skillful sarcasm is barbed and usually painful. People who are thin-skinned, self-important, or otherwise emotionally stunted can only notice the pain without any appreciation for the craft; fine work is wasted on them. Fortunately for the rest of us the sarcastic are often true artists who practice the art for its own sake, so the beat-down goes on."

I took a picture of the back of the Sunrun guy's car, here it is:

Re: No Sense Of Humor.......

After hundreds of times of politely saying some version of "no thanks" to the same HD saleswoman trying to push HVAC services on me, I changed my strategy with her. I went silent for a while, then had to get in her face and explain what a contractor looks like, and told her that I know what I'm here for, etc. But she still didn't get it, so I started being even more direct. Then I started getting slow and loud. Now she gets it, with me anyhow.

I hated to do it, but it saved a lot of aggravation going forward.

Re: No Sense Of Humor.......

They pain in the a$$, they all over the place and not only solar panels, they try sell windows, siding, etc and they hang around Cosco, BJ's, etc.

What really ticks me off is that you be wearing a shirt with company tags, and they still trying to sell you windows, not to mention they cling to you like fly's on S^*T and following you around after you tell them that you're obviously in business, you not interested and that you can buy the windows cheaper and you can do the job yourself, yet they keep bombarding you with questions after you tell them 10 times you not interested.
The other day in this scorching heat after a long day, I stopped at Cosco on the way home to get a few cases of water, and this guy got on my ass with this BS sales pitch... I told him 3 times that I'm in the business and and I do all that... Yet he keeps at it and following me to the exit, so I told him in a polite manner " With all do respect...It's been a long day...Please get the fk away from me because I'm not in the mood"... I'm glad he got the message.
