No Sense Of Humor.......

The other day while my wife goes into the grocery store, next door, I wander into Home Depot to get some bug spray and a couple of other things.

While walking the length of the store to get to the garden department, I get approached by a Sunrun solar sales guy. In the past it was Solar City and before that somebody else. I always had fun with these young guys (and they were young guys at the lowest level of the sales department).

They are all trying to sell or lease you solar for your house. I would start to listen to them, then ask if they could do something for my house like this....this would be pictures of me on my phone where our company would be working on some of the world's largest solar farms....2.5 to 4.5 billion dollar operations. That would shut them up and we would have a good laugh.

Anyway, so this young guy from Sunrun started his usual "canned" sales pitch. I interrupted him and said: "You know that sounds kinda interesting, but you know, the reason I came to Home Depot today was because I checked my inventory, and, I was completely out of Dumb Ass. But thanks anyway".

The Sunrun kid goes completely ballistic. "Hey!!! I'm only trying to do my job, I don't need to be insulted !". I said...it's a joke, it's not about you.

He continues on about how insulting I am and how I have no consideration for him.....and now he is following me around, yelling at me. I told him again, ..Hey pal, it's a joke I tell around here all time (and I do, especially with the guys I know in the electrical department)...it has NOTHING to do with you, your job or anything". This doesn't stop him though. Finally I get far enough away from this guy that I don't hear him anymore.

Good ol' HD, always living up to my expectations.

Hurt feelings. Probably counseling in his future. Maybe a lawsuit against HD for allowing people like you in their stores.

In his defense it was a weird thing to say to a stranger. I either don't get the joke or cant find the humor in it too. The dude probably has a bunch of the chest puffed out hot shots saying dumb stuff to him every day.

Wow.

Whatever happened to being decent and courteous to everyone, even those below your station.

Thats the mark of a true gentleman.

Insulting random strangers for no reason sounds like something a millennial would do.

You were in the wrong. He overacted. If you simply said “not interested” like most people do, there would have been no further interaction.

Just kind of strange all around.

If you randomly said that to me I'd probably look at you and say, seems pretty full to me.

I agree you may have thought it was funny but you were completely disrespectful to someone in the workforce trying to make a go at life, To redeem yourself I would suggest going back to that Home Depot and find that young man and apologize for your off-the-cuff remark. Mho

Re: No Sense Of Humor.......

What, everyone takes this personal? It isn't.

Of the two, the sales guy was out of line.

Suppose it was a large breasted sales woman, and CWAT asked her where to get balloon spinnakers made. That's more of a direct personal reference, but I'd expect the woman to either ignore it or laugh. She isn't there to pop off at people, even if it torques her.

Can being a wiseass backfire? Sure. You don't count on someone being a headcase.

Re: No Sense Of Humor.......

Apparently, there is a certain age that takes everything personally. If you are in a large hardware store, approaching random strangers, trying to sell your products and service, while that random stranger is there looking for something specific, and it's not what you are selling.

If you come to my house and knock on the door and try to aggressively sell me whatever it is you got....it's a crap shoot. I might be nice and just say, thanks but no.....or.....sorry, got a house full of crap already...... or...sorry, Jesus was here right before you and I already bought his stuff.

So, I was rude and obnoxious, so what, at my age I can be that way when I want. If you're in sales (like I have most of my life), then the sooner you get a thick skin and roll with the punches, the sooner you're going to learn about life and be successful.

Welcome to life in the real world

I can see him voicing his objecting to your comment, but to follow you around the store crying about how you hurt his wittle feewings is just uncalled for. Grow up and get a set.

I think they call this "entitlement."

Most people avoid unnecessary conflict in a functioning society. Those who chose to create friction where none needs to be should not complain about the consequences of their actions.

Re: No Sense Of Humor.......

So, after reading some of the comments, especially those showing me the error of my ways and being a mean, nasty person. I have decided to make amends.

I am going to go back to the store and search this young man out and sincerely apologize for butt hurting him personally, so bad that he needed to react in an uncontrolled hissy fit, which obviously had a profound affect on his day and most likely his life.

In fact, I feel so bad right now, that not only will I apologize to this guy, I am going to give him a participation trophy for being part of the vast multitude of random sales people who I have caused irreversible psychological trauma over the years.

Re: No Sense Of Humor.......

yes- you were rude and obnoxious!
saying "dumbass" was more directed to him personally. a person is a dumbass not a store.
still his response was totally out of whack.
he should have just blown you off

So, if you're in a crowded room and someone yells "DUMBASS", how many of you are going to raise your hand ?

While he may have overreacted, I personally think you can find a better way to deal with these annoyances. Either come up with something clever to say, or just don't reply at all. I think if you were in his shoes you would certainly see things differently.

You're never too young to be obnoxious. When I was young, I'd probably just tell the guy to get lost.

If you don't want to take what people are going to dish out, don't take a job as a telemarketer, door to door, or similar sales. Unwelcome interruptions are just that.

Re: No Sense Of Humor.......

Face it, this type of sales tactic us rude to begin with. The sales person had a total lack of sensitivity to what he was doing

I don't have to consider both sides here, I only have to consider one side.

What about an aggressive salesman going door to door. When he doesn't move on when you tell him please leave immediately, is it rude to show him what's in your hand? Does everyone need to wear a "go away" t-shirt all the time, or is that rude, too?
