Re: My New Companion...

Thanks all.
A little update...
She has a mind of her own...shall we say a little stubborn?
The house training is just starting to sink in. I didn't use the pads or a crate but just made sure she was out every hour or so. She's been getting plenty of excersize twice per day and she needs it...lots of energy.
Teaching her to mouth instead of hard bite has been challenging but that too is starting to come around. Other dog owners were getting a little concerned as she just goes right after any size dogs and wants to bite. I think it's just playing but there is a fairly harsh growling involved also and she needs to learn to calm down around other dogs. I see some improvement though.
I've taken her with me (blanket on the passenger seat of the truck) everyday and that has worked out well so far. She sleeps while I'm away and I make sure she gets lots of walks and pee time during the day.
So...so far so good. Most of my concerns are just from the fact that she is still only about 18 weeks old. If she is part Blue Lacey, that may explain some of the biting and nipping. They were bred to herd hogs and I think most hearding dogs tend to use their mouths to keep the herd in control...
I've never seen such a beautiful coat on any dog. Jet black and like silk. Haven't seen any signs of shedding so far but that may come in the spring/summer.
12.8 lbs at the vet last Tuesday. I'm thinking she won't get over 20 lbs....a runt.
That's it...

Re: My New Companion...

Stick your fingers/hand down her gullet every time she's biting on you, repeating "no bite". Works wonders.

I've just been folding his lips over his back teeth so he bites himself...
Works to a point, I will take your approach, Jay, under advisement.

Thanks, D.

P.S. Congratulations Robie, on the new addition.

If I had the room and the money, the SPCA would be vacant. My plan was to rescue an old-timer and a youngster.
It always comes down to money though.

Hey...that's fine with me. We'll see though.

I was hoping for a little larger dog but after I held her for about 60 seconds...she was mine...no turning back. Like they say...size doesn't matter.

I thought it would be nice to have one that could get in the truck by herself instead of being "put" there

Re: My New Companion...

My pup was that size when we got her. They said she would be under 15lbs fully grown. She now 3 and has been 50 lbs since she was a year.

Re: My New Companion...

Not to highjack, just joining in on the topic, if I may.

As briefly mentioned in DaVinci's thread "...the most painful thing...", I lost my good ole boy, Java, just shy of 14, in August...

It was tough, but surprising, even harder on the Mrs.
I would have been OK to skate through with our 6 year old rescued mutt, Mocha (Mookie), she turned into a dream, stays in the yard, only poops in the woods, and if had her way, would live outside. Just open the door, let her out, no worries. I can't praise her enough. The true dream dog.

Anyway, after about a month or so of heart ache, the Mrs. decides to rescue, a rescue from one of her clients, that keep's him in the cage for... Well, let's just say way too long... So while I'm away she brings him home for a meet and greet with Mocha. They get along famously.

Meanwhile, I'm still holding out. Winter is coming, I don't want to train another dog right now, "let's enjoy Mookie, at least for a little while." Let alone he is the spitting image of Java, at least the head, otherwise a little vertically challenged.
The wife really does agree. Easier to go away, we haven't had vacation for years, struggled to visit family far away, etc.etc.etc. It's tough to ask someone to care for two dogs for any length of time.

Finally, another month or so goes by, she is totally distraught and can't take it anymore, about three weeks ago, while I'm at the shore (minor fire), she breaks down and brings him home. He really does deserve a better life. I pop home for a day and a half over the weekend, barely long enough to meet the little guy, but...
Then back to the shore for appointments, clean up and etc. for another week.

So I've been home about a week now and realize Dunkin' is home too.
Robie, Dunkin' could be Cleo's brother. He's Lab and Basset... Bassador?
At about 8 months, when we acquired him (fixed), he had some training, but still has a long row to hoe. Overall though, he's a good boy.

Mocha loves him, although, what goes around comes around. Dunkin' (Dunkie) bites and nips at Mookies ears, tail and legs and wrestles around, just like she did to Java at that age. Sometimes, she gets a little tired of it, but t!t for tat, that's how it goes.

OK, I better stop now. I'll try to put up a couple pics.

Thanks for reading, hope I didn't offend,
D.

Messed up loading photos.
1.Mocha & Java 2.Mocha & Dunkin' 3.Dunkin', now
4. Java boy 5.Dunkin' before the meet & greet, about Sept.

Thanks again, good night.
