Music Too Good Not To Know About.

Someone should have told me about these guys a long time ago. What else have I been missing?

Re: Music Too Good Not To Know About.

You've probably been missing much of the music on your local scene too. You'd be surprised at how much good music there is in your area by people who never become famous.

I had a client who played in a band. One day while I was at his house working, his group was rehearsing. In my naivety I suggested that they were good enough to have their own record album.

Nonchalantly he said, "Actually we do. It was released in the early 90's and we sold 100,000 copies."

Re: Music Too Good Not To Know About.

I had a friend in boot camp from Florida and said he was in a band and he was the drummer. I went down to Jacksonville that Christmas to visit and the guy had his set in the living room, he was amazing, double bass kicks and all. This was in '72, he said they were one of the two hot local groups in town but some of them went into the service. But his high school buddies were still at it and if I ever see and album by Lynyrd Skynyrd I should buy it.

Re: Music Too Good Not To Know About.

Those stories rule.

I had a customer who was obviously a good musician. House was littered with high end gear. I asked him about stuff he worked on and he completely stonewalled me. All he would say was that one of his projects wad big in Europe, specially Germany, in the 80's. This made it so much worse for me wanting to know.
I respected his privacy wishes for a full five years, but then a couple years back I finally have in to temptation and googled him.
I was thrilled to find that he was in a period-typical band in every were of rock and roll. Suit wearing mod 60's, long haired 70's, and ridiculous big haired 80's.
Still haven't gotten the nerve up to tell him I know. Ha

No need to say anything. Download some of his music and the next time you're at his place working, start playing some of it on your phone.

Most times these guys gets used and abused by the industry. They get the fame but they get very little of the fortune. They become an icon but they don't have anything to show for it financially. So when you meet these musicians who are a little tight-lipped about their past, they aren't being modest. They are just burying their pain.

One of the most heart breaking things for a musician is to see yourself on an album cover knowing that you didn't get anything close to a fair deal. And even worse, many of them don't own their image or their own name so it's not like they can just go out and perform on their own without getting sued.

My client told me that the ruthless practices in the music industry is the reason why he became an attorney.. and he didn't say much more about it.

We always expect to hear about how cool it was travel the world and how exciting it might have been to meet famous people but more often than not, a lot of these guys are left outside of the dream looking in.

A few examples of my favorite- North Mississippi Hill Country Blues. This is where rock & roll came from.
