Meat Allergy - Audio

Here's a follow-up interview regarding the "lone star tick & meat allergy" story. (15 minutes) It's the first story of the full episode.

(Of note: infected folks would get hives at least 4 hours after eating meat...which is not typical for allergic reactions....therefore docs might not diagnose correctly.)

Re: Meat Allergy - Audio

One of my co-workers has a meat allergy from a tick bite. It really sucks because he's an avid hunter.

If you've got deer (who doesn't?), you're at risk.

He mentions some hotspots: Lynchburg, VA, tristate of OK-AK-MO

Whenever I go hiking on rough fishing trips, I end up running into the Lone Star. I imagine to be infected one needs to have the tick engorge itself and then "burp" up the infection from its gut to your bloodstream.

This is mostly how Lymes disease is contracted via the deer tick, from my understanding.

Not at our rendezvous, was it? We have plenty of 'em in PA, but I've never seen one at that location.
