You bet looked up a lot of auto part numbers, when I first left school the first job I had was for a company that had 14 vans leave twice a day delivering auto parts, then also we had a huge truck to deliver body shells and body panels, we where the parts supply for all the British Leyland dealerships and Jaguar dealerships in and around Birmingham England.

45 years later I can still remember part numbers for things.

You have me beat. 1981 Ford, for a lot of carb and related parts I had to know what the metal tag on the carb was. E2EEJ1C....

Yeah 30 years. But we already had well established electronic social media systems.

Sounds about right. Dad had a website development business that he started in '93. People thought he was crazy.

I was balling on BBS's before social media was a thing. 6 people at a time!

I think '93 was my first login.

I had dialup at home in 94 or 95. The wild west internet. Cool stuff, even though I didn't fully appreciate what I had at the time or how to work it.

Re: Let's Talk About Life Before The Internet

I don't know when my first hookup into the internet was but it was by a pretty slow modem and it was a Bulletin Board. I played games, some version of dungeons and dragons. It was so slow. It was the kind it would put up a small pixilated graphic with a question of what you wanted to do next. Y, N, N, S, E, W were the answers they were looking for to determine where you'd like to go in the map and if you wanted to do something like pick up an axe.

In 93, the Feds were putting Service Notes and Bulletins, as well as Airworthiness directives out online....service manuals went from microfiche to online in a matter of a few years, and that was the internet for me....until 97 or so. 56K dial up modem.......now that was speed baby!

My son brought in the control box from our 40RTS JLG manlift...broken wire on a circuit board, and I found a few other wires that were out of the terminal strips....search with "JLG" and a part number, and within a second, full wiring schematic on my laptop. I traced the wires out...and that was that. $1,650 for a new box....time spent, 1/2 an hour and a few inches of solder.

That is where the internet shines.

Re: Let's Talk About Life Before The Internet

I jumped on Usenet within weeks of it being introed.

It was great. Everything was available. The good, the bad, the ugly.

Backbone Cabal, Inner Circle, WarezFAQ.

Phone Phreakers and dope peddlers.

Software hackers, crackers and packers.

FBI sneaking around everywhere.

UUCP, NNTP, then over TCP/IP.

(edit) ROT13, PGP.

Good times, good times.

At one time, you had to spell out every single server an email was to be routed through to get to the final destination. There was a whole book on formatting the address, etc.

Re: Let's Talk About Life Before The Internet

Before sites took countermeasures, you could fire up your modem and use something like Blue Squirrel and it would download a whole site or part if a site so you could look at it on your computer, which was way faster to browse and didn't tie up your phone.

Sites were a lot smaller.

STG reminded me of phone phreaking. That was hacking before there was hacking. All you needed was the box. Or a whistle from a box of Captain Crunch.

Re: Let's Talk About Life Before The Internet

Phone Phreaking is so interesting to me.

I only ever tried a few little things and never got into the really weird stuff. I guess mostly because most of the glitches were hammered out by the time I was a little bastard. Plus, once the internet came around there was almost no such thing as boredom, which is a shame.
I definitely made a number of potentially harmful and illegal things that I got "recipes" for out of various "cookbooks" from seedier parts of the internet.
