Hey, guess who did the data entry work when Thomas went online?

I know more about ISO compliance and certifications than any man alive.

Others who were more last minute would call with a price then you would have to hand write their entire scope of work as you discussed with them over the phone.

The FAX changed all that, and that machine really got a workout on bid day, spitting out sub and supplier quotes on that crummy thin rolled paper. Really no need for a FAX machine now, with email and scanning.

Ever see the Sweets Catalogs? They were like the encyclopedia set for construction materials, organized by CSI numbering. Used to keep big rack of those in the office and you updated them annually, quite expensive. Also had tons of supplier binders where you could see the details on their various products
Every product cut sheet was in there, needed a special desk just to hold them

You are a youngster for sure

It was Norm and Bob Vila was the host who was from Miami
I remember clearly the very first house, it was a dump on a hill next to a church in Dorchester.
It was also a book about it

Watched those first episodes intensely. Betamaxed them all.

Then there was the Sears debacle.

Vila had a spinoff show - what was that?

Re: Let's Talk About Life Before The Internet

This thread is working out great.

What did we do before the internet?

Talk in circles, without actually ever winding back to the original point of discussion.

Re: Let's Talk About Life Before The Internet

Let me mess up the thread lol.

I can say when I grew up there were still black and white TVs and dial phones in spare rooms.

And you left the house no one knew where you could be for 12 hrs. Beepers before cells.

The transformation of my home town during my life is making me feel old.

Talking about Chilton's repair manual made me think of the massive amount of money I sunk into my first truck. Must have been 5 Auto part store in town, now none but a pep boys close. I guess because people didn't lease or live on credit then.

Re: Let's Talk About Life Before The Internet

About a thousand posts in, I've noticed that about every three to four months, one of you old dinosaurs posts a slightly different version of the "remember back when everything was awesome before and we used to walk up hill both ways to school in the snow against the wind and you young whippersnappers have no idea how good you have it" thread.

The next round, I'm gonna start a thread about all the truly sh!tty things we used to do as a country that we have improved on.

I've been thinking since you started this thread that...you weren't going to like the answers.
