Re: Joasis

She has read it, I will have to ask her. I have not read it yet....I hate to read anything for pleasure that leaves me depressed at the end. The older I get, the lower my misery index is.

My younger daughter said it is required reading in Oklahoma History classes in College...and these are only required if you are going to teach history in an Oklahoma school....so not a lot of exposure.

My wife is Navajo, and she is one generation from forced relocation to boarding schools and indoctrination to end the Native culture. He mother and father were both shipped to Oklahoma after being taken from their own parents and forced into Indian boarding schools at Ft. Sill. My father in law told me of getting his head shaved, and being beaten if they were caught speaking Navajo. And all of this was in the 50s, after the Navajo Code Talkers served this nation.....not all history can be sanitized.

Re: Joasis

I spent some time growing up with a Navajo from the Flagstaff area. Our youth group traveled down to the reservation to camp out with their family for a week. I was only 15 at the time and didn't grasp the poverty they endured but remembered the beauty of the dessert.

My friend, Jay, spoke Navajo from time to time.

My wife speaks Navajo as her primary language, and English is secondary. Her grandparents did not speak English at all. Her parents spoke Navajo at home. And I don't speak or understand a word of it. My baby girl is fluent in Spanish....acquired from growing up with a lot of Hispanic friends....and speaks no Navajo either. If you don't grow up from birth speaking it, you cannot really ever learn it.
