Hey UK Guys, What Should I Do In London?

My wife is here on business. I'm here on chilling out.

I'm all alone and have no idea what to do.

I went to the V&A and Nat. History museums. I've been popping into any pub that looks interesting.
I'd be into anything architecturally important, any good flea markets or boot sales, or any notable drinking or music sites. Probably going to hit the 100 Club tomorrow just to see it.

Any input appreciated. I'm here until Friday.

Soho and the general area at night, London science museum, Tower of London, London eye, fabric night club but only if you like partying hard and dance music. You would find the whole structure amazing how and where it is and what it used to be.

I lived there but only see that stuff when I took my wife. There's a silly amount to do but depending how long you there. Tower of London pretty cool and shouldn't be missed.

Re: Hey UK Guys, What Should I Do In London?

Should have asked earlier.

Not a lot for me to do here in the day time. Would actually have liked to put in a day in Metric. Actually, do you guys use imperial? I was surprised to see road markers all in miles instead of KM.

I'll see about getting over to the Tower of London tomorrow.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Roads are imperial
Plans are metric
Tape measures are both

What a world.

You Brits are so proper it amazes me. Your street level site viewing windows are trimmed! That blew me away. In the US we generally hack a triangle into plywood with a circular saw. hah

Yeah but all your cars get like a million MPG.

I just drove from London to Edinburgh to Carlisle and back to London for under 100 quid. That's like a damn miracle. The train was going to be 400 for two.
I think we'd rented a diesel Peugot 700? Is that a thing?

What's up with this tube strike though? Seriously cramping my style. I'm not a bus kind of guy.

Re: Hey UK Guys, What Should I Do In London?

When I make it to England one of the first things I'm going to do is find an old timer who was a school boy in London during WWII and ask him to take me through the "Battle of Britain" that he went through. Every elderly man I've met from London has a story about it and Churchill is one of the greatest history writers ever, and this was his finest book (Their Finest Hour).

I've been to a bunch of WWI and WWII battle sights but the battle of Britain is the one that I feel I have to see, just because that was where WWII was really won.

If you're not a history buff the way it goes is, Hitler was going to try to invade England (operation Seahorse) but needed air supremacy. Guerring's Luftvafah had an overwhelming majority in fighters and bombers, it looked like he would completely take out the Brits in the skies. London was bombed beyond belief after the Brits not only succeeded in staying around but won decisively in the fighter arena, because the Germans bombed an actual city by accident so the Brits bombed German cities to make a point. Hitler retaliated and went on a terror bombing of England's major cities for the next 6 months or so. The Brits might be "proper" but make no mistake, those bad SOB's are the heroes of WWII!

I am SOOOOO jealous right now. Go see Hadriens wall if nothing else. So much history there, they are the hingepoint to what we live.

Uh see if they are filming "Top gear", I don't know why but I really like that show...... EASY G in the reasonably priced car!

Favorite was them trying to kill an 80s Toyota pickup, and failing. I had one of them HiLuxes , put 33s on it and drove it thru creaks. forests, and i couldnt kill mine either, My GF could tho, I got tired of replacing clutch and traded for a chevy with an automatic, she killed it too!

What's funny is you taught me more then than I learned at school. It's scary to look back at what we were taught in history. It was more about the pyramids than ww2. Churchill was not existent in my school days and I learned more about him from the US than the UK.

Re: Hey UK Guys, What Should I Do In London?

Try checking out the Churchill War Rooms, these are the underground rooms where the military and government continued operations during The Blitz. They have only in recent years become open the public. My Grandpa worked there during WWII as a Navy Officer.
Also check out the Imperial War Museum, and you can't go wrong with the Tower of London, but it will be very busy during the summer.

Up for a train ride? go North and visit York - a brilliant railway museum there and York Castle along with a fine cathedral known as York Minster.
Go south to Portsmouth Harbour - excellent Naval history there - HMS Victory Lord Nelson's flagship from when we whipped the Spanish Armada and HMS Mary Rose - King Henry VIII flagship that was recovered from the bottom of The Solent, along with several other ships.
On the River Thames is HMS Belfast a WWII battleship.
That should keep you going, be sure to get some good fish and chips along with a pint.
[email protected] now I am homesick.

It's a shame but the way history is taught in American schools today Churchill is was a warmongering drunk. Kids can't hear about histories great heroes as heroes.

My kids will always know history. If any teacher ever tries to call Churchill a warmongering drunk, Patton an a-hole, or Rommel a liability than I will make sure to let them know how stupid they are (all of those guys had their personal problems but each is a hero in his own right). WWII belongs to the Brits though and as much as it pains me to say it, France was really the top dog being the underdog in WWI with a BUNCH of help from the crown.

I love Europe but wish they weren't so stupid nowadays.

To keep it construction related, I don't know how these people operate out of such tiny trucks.
I've seen a few poor tradesman with just told attached on tools I'm these tiny trucks. They're getting it done, but I can't imagine the mental stamina it would take to work like that.

My brother is a plasterer in London. I know he takes his plastering tools to work on the bus. He doesn't drive, by choice.

My grandmother has a story of being on a date with my grandfather and after leaving the pub realising she'd forgotten her umbrella. As they were turning back to get it the air raid sirens went off and they went inside or whatever. An hour later they went back to get it and the pub was ruins.
