Happy With New Worker But A Bit Worried-

i hired a new worker and happy with his work, however, he is a bit too intense. the guy will literally stare at you for what seems to be a lifetime without blinking, very strange. he also makes statements like " its a nice day outside", and then gets angry if someone doesnt respond. he then says " , i said its nice out, dont you guys have an opinion"?
i also caught him staring at a hammer for over 5 minutes. my one worker told me to come take a look and there was this guy, laying on the grass on his stomache and staring at a hammer. the guy just stared at which we timed and it was a bit over 5 minutes. he then just got up and finished his lunch.
another wierd thing was his second day, it was very hot and he asked for a 10 minute break so i told him to go in my truck and i will turn on the air which i did, 15 minutes later i open the truck door to grab my clip board and he has the radio turned up to complete static. i kind of joked and asked what kind of music was this and he replied, " this is soothing" .
he seems nice but extremely intense and strange. hopefully things dont get any worse, any of you guys have strange worker?

I was going to ask something about drugs/alcohol... then I realized you're a roofing company. Say no more, say no more!

Maybe he was watching ants on his hammer.

Why don't you answer him when he asks questions?

Have you guys seen the Enbrel commercial with Phil Mickelson?

That guy never blinks - it's freaky.

My ex-wife was kind of like that guy insofar as getting upest over my (or anyone else's) failure to respond to one of her comments. To me, a comment like "Nice day outside" is just that, a comment. I would explain to her that only questions needed responses. She never could grasp the concept.

Haven't seen the B.S. meter before.

If the OP is serious I would check the papers for psych ward escapees. Theres a mental hospital around here that used to have a sign on the highway that said not to pick up hitchhikers so I assume they escape sometimes.

I want to know what these guys get paid. I've never had any problems like these with my guys, especially once I fired the bad apple. Three have been with me for two years. They aren't this weird.

I think the other guy needs to add a Drama in front of his screen name, cause there is always some serious drama on his jobs.

Re: Happy With New Worker But A Bit Worried-

You didnt interview this guy?

The trouble i had with my last guy was BO or the smell of the dead skunk he ate the night before that kept escaping his A55! Other than that the few guys i have hired were decent guys and hard workers. The fella i have now is probably the best so far although he needs to learn more of the field, but he wants to learn and best of all has common sense.

Re: Happy With New Worker But A Bit Worried-

As much as I would like to knock the OP, I have seen similar. Most likely this new guy has a bad case of OCD.

He looks at his hammer, then has to keep looking at it for an odd amount of time, or an even amount of time. Then he needs to figure a way to look at it so he doesn't have to keep looking.

He tuned in the static, then he needed to keep listening until he could find a way for his brain to let him stop listening.

When he asks a question, if he doesn't get a response, it literally pisses him off. Nothing he can do about it except find a way to balance it out and then he will be fine until next time.

Unfortunately, if these types of guys don't figure out a way to deal with it, they can slow down production.

Don't ask me how I know, but it used to take me 45 minutes to leave the house. My wife is a veritable portrait of patience.

However, if this isn't the reason, then I go with the BS meter. If not that meter, then where is the WTF meter. You need to pick better guys. Though I can't find anyone these days either.

Where is the mass of unemployed that actually want to work? Every contractor I know is swamped. I can't even find help for two stinkin' days.

I think we need pictures of this worker. I would even be impressed if you provided pictures of a work truck or even a small pile of tools. I think davinci is Opie with a new laptop..
