Got Some Great (formerly Bad) News

Well i have stage 3 throat cancer, in mid May i went to the doctors about a small pain in my jaw on the r/h side when i swollowed.

The doctor put me on a 10 day course of antibiotics after looking in my throat, he's thinking was some kind of infection, after 10 days i still had the pain and a small lump in my neck, called and spoke to the doctor he prescribed another course (10 days) of antibiotics.

So as all this is going on my wife go's to N.Y. to see her brother and comes back with some kind of flu bug, i think i'm cool because i am taking antibiotics, wrong 7 days in to my second 10 day course i am in the doctors office with a face mask feeling like crap.

The doctor does the usual breath in and out while he has a listen to my lungs etc, he then prescribes some killer antibiotics for 7 days (2 a day $25.00 ea) figures i have some kind of bronchitis.

7 days later i am no longer coughing as bad and spitting out a unending supply of phlegm, but still have a irritation in my throat.

So on the Tuesday morning i have a small coughing fit and spit out the phlegm but this time it has blood, and after coughing i feel some thing in my throat, so get a mirror and a flash light and take a look in my throat/mouth , in the r/h side at side of my mouth blocking 1/2 my air way is a growth of some sort that was not there before the cough.

Wednesday morning i am in the emergency room they look in my throat take me and scan my throat, the doctor comes in and tells me i have a 3cm growth and i need to go see this other doctor and she has called him and he is waiting for my call !, so out side in the car my wife calls and he will see me first thing friday morning.

Friday morning the doctor take a look, this involves sticking some thing up my nose and down my throat, then gives me the cancer news and tells me we have to operate, call monday morning and he will tell me if its tuesday or wednesday he has to find out when the O.R. is available and he can not remove all the cancer because it in my throat i will need radiation and chemo.

Wednesday i have my tonsils and 70 % of the growth removed ( i do not recomend this operation ) the doctor warns me about the recovery from the operation its a real b!tch he did not lie !!!

2 weeks later i go see the oncologist he tells me what to expect chemo, radiation , wants to install a port, have a E.K.G. and a pet scan go see the radiologist and this may take a up to year but this is a survivable condition.

Thursday 2 days later i go see the radiologist, he takes a look in my throat with the up your nose and down your throat tool, then tells me how many radiation treatments he thinks 35.

So on the way to see the radiologist i say to my wife trying to keep the mood light "well at least it won't be bad news i know i have cancer"
WRONG, before we can start the radiation treatment you need to have your teeth removed on the r/h side of your lower jaw, the teeth will not make it through the treatment, so leave there go see the oral surgeon.

Friday morning 7.30 am next day have my teeth removed, felt good till saturday morning given the choice have your tonsils removed, that was 2 weeks ago today.

Last monday the radiologist made a mask for my face to protect it from the rays, i start my radiation on monday can't wait .

I have been on oxy's since the throat operation, 2 every 6 hours it hurts to chew it hurts to swollow, dinner last night mash spuds peas and carrots (frozen kind) gravy and jello no chewing, just suck it off the fork same as breakfast today pancakes floating in syrup.

I hope some one reads this and learns from it, this cancer came on from nowhere, in a little over 2 month period i have gone from a small pain when a i swallowed to where i am to day.

Sorry for the long post but i had to find the energy, it has taken me 3,1/2 hours to write this .

Re: Got Some Great (formerly Bad) News

God bless....they can do amazing things if caught early....I hope that applies to you. (....thought I was having a rough week...?)

I had a cough for 2 years. In the end I had kidney cancer. Tumor gone, cough gone. The tumor secretes an enzyme or something that creates coughing.

My lead man just had a cancer diag 2 weeks ago. Went in for pre-op, blood work, sign the papers. Doctor calls yesterday...can't do the surgery. He would bleed to death on the table or during recovery due to nil liver function. Cirrhosis from Hep C and alcohol from back when....He's going to see his preacher today.

He might want to trade places with you....but really this is some serious sh*t. Thanks for letting us know. I hope the prayers and good wishes from others help you as much as they helped me.

Thoughts and prayers to you & your family.

Very similar circumstances for a very good GC friend of mine.

Re: Got Some Great (formerly Bad) News

Sorry to hear about your throat cancer. My Mom had this, they operated and the prognosis was good. Unfortunately she continued to smoke, and the had to operate again and took her voice box out and she now has a stoma. The good news is that she is doing well today. You can make it through.

The only thing that I can think of that may help you is that every time you use your feeding tube, you will need to flush it out with distilled water. Nobody ever told her that, and she was sick all of the time. We just thought it was the Chemo, but come to find out it was because the food in the external part of the feeding tube was spoiled. She was sick for months until another patient told her to flush the tube.

Good luck, and God bless.

Re: Got Some Great (formerly Bad) News

Holy crap. My sciatica suddenly feels a whole lot better. Prayers for you, man.

Speaking of which, some years back a rough, tough SOB neighbor of mine was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. His major complaint when telling me about it was "I guess I need to start going to church now."

Might not hurt, y'know?
