I'd have retired years ago.Don't have any kids but I hear they take plenty of money to keep them running.Worse than buying batteries for all your cordless tools from what I hear?

Re: Free Range Kids

great thread, so it seems most of us were major free range kids is that why we are contractors and trades people?

the boundaries were pretty loose when I was kid even though they existed they were made to be broken, gone into the woods for hours on end all year round

was told to stay out of old barns, sure we listened to that until my buddy put his leg through the floor, somehow he stopped himself from going further, I was below and saw his leg pop through the floor, still remember that to this day, that scared us for a couple hours, then we were back at it climbing as high up as we could

used to take the bus into town and hang out downtown until my dad was done working and ride home with him I think I was ten when I started doing that

had a room mate who wandered around nyc as a young girl, to and from school, and where ever she wanted with no supervision in the 80's

wasn't allowed to ride my bike past a certain point, well sure enough I got hit by a car pretty far from that point, I was just fine, but the driver was super freaked out, and I got in trouble for being past my boundary, even though I begged the driver to leave me be she insisted I get driven back home to tell my parents what happened

the list is endless

Yeah, just one can keep all CT members in batteries for quite some time...

Re: Free Range Kids

We let our kid roam more than most around here. As soon she she could walk she was in the backyard while I was answering mail inside. One day she dropped the birdfeeder on herself; she still remembers it almost a year later. Pain reminds kids much better than words.

Let me go free! We need to stop coddling this generation. They're only going to coddle their kids even more till the point where nobody will be walking on the streets anymore.

Re: Free Range Kids

The majority of my childhood was spent in the woods behind my parents house. They had 15 acres that butted up to my uncles 20 and both properties butted up to a friend of the family's 2400 acre farm. In the summers I would leave the house after breakfast and me and the dog would stay out until almost dark. Streams to play in, a nice little bass pond, an old shaft coal mine that my dad and uncles quickly boarded up to keep us kids out....It wasn't uncommon to see me, a couple cousins, and some 10 to 15 year old kids walking down the lane with fishing poles and/or shotguns and .22 rifles for a day in the woods.

Whatever film that was shot on is perfect. Wherever he was raised is perfect.

That video should go to the Library of Congress. It should win Best Picture.
