Favorite Type Of Store

What's your favorite kind of store, despite most that are worse than getting a root canal?

I'm partial to old fashioned hardware stores, 5&10 type variety, and the occasional second hand shop. Also, tool and product aisles at the lumber yard, when they have that professional retail set-up.

Re: Favorite Type Of Store

Love the old fashioned hardware stores. Pick a number, get called and someone who knows each of the 20,000 things behind the counter helps you.

Also specialty stores. It's a novelty for me coming from a smaller town where there weren't many options. Larger city has enough demand for a dedicated store (or 3) for ball bearings, a store for inflatable rafts, a store for bird baths, to pick a very random selection.

Re: Favorite Type Of Store

I'm not big on an kind of "shopping" but there is a place near me that is a combination metal scrap yard and new product store. From diamond plate to screws, I can and do roam around there for hours.

The other store is any great Italian food market. I love the many varieties of olive salads, the cheeses, breads and cannolis.

Good call. I forgot about those. I have to make a conscious effort to stay out of those stores because I know I will spend money on things I don't need.

Re: Favorite Type Of Store

Pier One and Bed Bath & Beyond are on the endangered list.
There use to be a chain of stores in the mall that sold cooking gear.

And while your there check out Spencer's and Orange Julius

Re: Favorite Type Of Store

I second those Italian food stores.

Before the holidays I discovered a Russian supermarket in Philly. (Net Cost) Very interesting place, like a European market. Every kind of pickle, smoked fish counter, whatever.

Unfortunately, a couple weeks later they were raided by the liquor control board of Pennsylvania for selling chocolates filled with liquor, an eastern European holiday thing.

We got those when I was in Germany. They are about as good as any chocolate candy could get.

Try Home Goods and Marshall’s. You can find some good deals at them.

I have to avoid Williams and Sonoma.

Re: Favorite Type Of Store

In order

Auctions of all types
Good local fishing supply
Local butcher
Real woodworking machinery (have stayed away from Glenco since Glen left)
Exotic wood lumber yards (if you are near any Advantage Lumber they take this to a new level that everyone should experience)
Local feed store

If it's not local, I dont really care to go into it... might as well buy it online because I can do the research from my own computer and dont have to go to town to deal with the idiots that know less about the product than I do by the time I've researched it. Plus dont have to go into town with the idiots who cant drive. Local places always seem to be much more knowledgable about the things they're selling and usually have some insight I've overlooked or didnt even think about. It's a pleasure to go into all the local places above.
