Re: For The Elder Gents.....

How about white walls, not only the tires but where the hair on your head was exposed above the ear, usually done with a straight razor by your barber who I always fervently hoped wasn't drunk or going nuts. This also ties into having hair inspection day during gym period. If your hair touched your ear it was reported to the dreaded Vice Principal.

We had two barbershops in town, and if I remember correctly, every other Saturday for $2, and you got your neck shaved with a straight razor, and the barbers were old guys...hands that shook.....but your neck was smooth. And flat tops were the cut when I was a kid, by high school, we rebelled and had hair to our collars. That was long hair now.

I grew up mostly on military bases. The standard (and expected) line you told the barber when you got in the chair..."short on the sides and a little off the top". The haircut was .35 cents

Driving a van with a bed , surf racks, black lights and posters, drinking bottled Dr pepper, 8 track tape, mini skirts and hot pants. Times were great.

I know Astro is the Jetsons.

Re: For The Elder Gents.....

My grandpa use to pick me up on Saturdays and we'd go to Harry's barber shop for a buzz cut. After that we'd stop at House Brother's tavern. He'd get a shot and a short draft and get me a 8 oz Coke in a bottle. They had no bar stools.Everyone stood at the bar.No phone so the wives couldn't call and no women allowed.Been there over a hundred years and there are still no women although they do have stools now.

you rich kids and your store bought haircuts..........
I never saw the inside of a barber shop till I started highschool , I think.

Dad cut the boys hair at home till we were about 12 or so.
I have always hated haircuts the way some people hate going to the dentist.......
was kind of a relief to start going bald in my 30's and buying clippers and been buzz cutting my own hair for 20 years now,

When I was a kid and went to the base barber shop, they called that a "regular".

True, but in reality it was redundant. It's the only haircut they knew.

Ever watch one cut someone's hair that was brought in by the MPs for being AWOL? Clip right down on the top, so they look like they have a Bozo cut. Then they let them sit there in the chair facing the mirror for 5 minutes while they joke with the other barbers.
