Eff Starbucks

Anybody else thinks The Starbucks franchise was weak in it's lack of support of the manager in Philadelphia?

Granted we don't know exactly what went down. But, it's feasible, she felt uncomfortable, and it was this stores policy to call the police to "excavate" non paying customers..... Why don't they have their own security, if it's happened before?

My intention isn't to make this something between the manager, and the two young men. It's about Starbucks grandstanding with their 4 hour field-trip, and covering up their culpability with this whole fiasco.

It's possible, the manager has a potential law-suit with the corporation.

I think the corporation showed a lack of support for the idea that a manager should be uncomfortable with people with brown skin loitering in her place of business that is known for encouraging loitering.

I think Starbucks did the right thing. Whether they did it for the right reasons or if it was simply a business decision is another thing entirely.

Ok. But, that should have been addressed in the interview when they hired her. Enforcing a customer-only bathroom policy, is a hard one to enforce. Again, something that should have been addressed in an interview.

Don't get me wrong, I am for some type of work related seminar. But, it's going to take a lot more than a four hour session. Are they really ready to spend that kind of money to address the issue?

Are the bathrooms at starbucks locked? They asked to use the bathroom? Out here, I can walk into a Starbucks and use the loo and walk out with hardly anyone even noticing.

Waiting in a coffee shop for a meeting is pretty common. Black people are common too. Esp in Philly. Not sure how this escalated to the point it did.

MarkJames 04-26-2018 08:24 AM

I don't know about the manager support, but the bigger problem is whatever their policy supposedly is, and applying it somewhat consistently. Even better, saying to a non-paying customer "ok, if you're not purchasing anything, I'm going to have to ask you to leave" before calling 911.

It probably doesn't help when you're dressed in baggy sweats, ruffled hair, walking and talking extra slow, and just going to "hang out"without buying. But lots of folks do that, I guess.

That store likely had locked bathrooms, which would make sense downtown as a practical matter. Otherwise, they'd mostly be cleaning the bathrooms from vagrant use and replacing TP rolls all day.

I think those guys resembled vagrants over all (skin color aside) which accounts for the quick phone call to police. Using 911 was still stupid as heck.

For sure. (Before I tell this little tale, understand that I'm a pretty stubborn SOB, and an a$$hole to boot, so.....)....

I walked into a subway (restaurant, not underground railway) once and my eyes were floatin', so to speak...I walked directly to the bathroom and someone behind the counter said "Are you going to buy something...bathrooms are for customers only" I gave him the ol' pointer finger up ("just a minute") thing and went on in, took care of my eyes, and came back out. And then, I answered his question "I WAS going to, just like I have several days a week for several years now. But NOW....no. You're not the only place around to eat lunch. Take care"

On my way out I think I heard some drivel about policy or some such thing, but it's not like he'd never seen me before. I wasn't kidding about the several days a week for several years (OK, maybe a couple days a week)

The manager enforced an established corporate policy.

They were asked my understanding three times by police to leave.

IMO, this was a setup deal.

I have a friend that owns a bunch of c stores. Needles left on floor and sinks, etc. , throwing used TP on the floor, crapping, peeing on the floor It's terrible the condition people leave them in and I'm sure property owner is just trying to minimize damage done.

I'd do the same.

Starbucks believes they are the moral compass for humanity.

Mordekyle 04-26-2018 09:19 AM

Ironic for Starbucks to ask the police for help when they disallow armed police from entering to buy a cup of coffee.

I pretty much avoid Starbucks because I don’t like their coffee and it is way overpriced. (If Starbucks were masons, they would charge $5 per brick). I do admire that they can get that much and scratch my head at all the people who wait in long lines for their overpriced coffee.

The whole thing was escalated to a point that never should have happened, and from what I have read, Corporate threw the manager(s) under a bus, as they were following policy. I am guessing that coporate was afraid of negative racial publicity.

Then there were some protests, or at least the media kept the story alive by reporting them, as it fits into their narrative, and not sure what it was the people were protesting? Who was at fault here? The Police, the Manager or the two patrons?

Lastly, while the media payed attention to this incident and eluded to the police as the bad guys, they reported very little to the two police who were killed while eating lunch in Florida.

you have a customer. your hope is to do the best job you can for them, yet maximize your profit.

so, you throw out your best front, you spend a zillion dollars "in your mind". on advertising, presentation, and closing....to close the deal, and succeed.

but, they have neighbors, who don't need/nor want any work done, never have used your services/nor never will...that keep showing up. you've politely asked them to stay off your job site. they keep showing up.

then, after the 3rd refusal, they sheet and pee all over your job site, upset trash cans, etc....

you call the cops, they ask them politely to leave, they won't...

guess what, you're the bad guy.

One has to be fair about implementing the policy. I used to hate going into the Barnes and Noble in Georgetown, and every damned desk and chair was occupied by a college studen, hours on end, studying, etc.

One good thing about Charbucks is the internet, so I hear. I haven't been in one in years when they stopped selling the "short coffee". It wasn't on teh menu, but existed. A somewhat drinkable, cheap jolt.
