Re: Disabled Cruise Ship Stuck In Gulf... Stinks!

I'm not a veteran cruiser, but my wife did pay for us and the kids to go on a cruise to Mexico. It was on Carnival and their were no problems. Food was great, weather was OK and I won the ping pong tournament.

My understanding is that there are like five generators, each the size of a bus and one backup generator. They are only on the one backup generator.

I don't know exactly where they are in the Gulf, but it takes ships some time to travel through the water. What are there, like 5 -6 thousand people aboard? That would be a lot of people to transfer to multiple ships. If it was in danger of sinking, I'm sure they would try to do that, but apparently it's not sinking, so they won't break the bank trying to get everyone off the ship.

Re: Disabled Cruise Ship Stuck In Gulf... Stinks!

theres 4200 people on board, and last i heard are about 110 miles from port.

Top cruising speed via tug boat?

4mph... cruising right along... I found pictures of the splendor disaster, their buried in youtube videos that take about 20 minutes to load a 3 minute video

I would want off the ship A.S.A.P.
I have to carefully plan my vacations around my work load and upcoming projects. If I were stuck at sea for three or four plus additional days, it could literally cost me thousands of dollars.
I would be forced to sue for my lost income.

Re: Disabled Cruise Ship Stuck In Gulf... Stinks!

You guys watching this on the news? A few people are calling in and complaining they are bitching there's no power to run lights, lifts or the toilets etc etc yet they are charging their cell phones and watching TV. I heard one guy on the radio saying some people are making a big deal out if nothing. He said they have power, toilets, food, lifts, water and its not no where near as bad as people are saying. Seems like the MSM are picking the people to have on the show who are the drama queens.

This just in: And now the effing tow line broke!

Can you imagine? Being stuck there, staring at the shoreline, while that snapped hawser dangles off the bow?!

They are saying "maybe" midnight before docking...

Carnival you say? Yeah, we got a carnival alright.

And nobody thought to bring a spare?

I'm not an expert on boating but usually when you go out on the water you bring a couple of extra ropes for ANY kind of situation. If you get stuck out there and a fellow boater helps pull you in, chances are that he has a couple of extra ropes too.

I guess it's like having jumper cables. If you don't have them, chance are that at least the second or third person you ask will. BUT if you have been having car problems lately and/or if you are going out to rescue someone on the side of the road, you don't leave home without them.

There's a total of 4 tugs on the ship, so its very likely they have reserves. They trouble is, those muthas are heavy, so you first have to feed up a leader line, then pull along the main hawser. Finally, you have to restage the tugs so they can get the hull aligned with the intended course.

And, it looks like they are dealing with some pretty good wave chop right now - which makes it even more interesting.

CNN has FINALLY got some passenger supplied photos and said they are gonna start showing them.

All I have seen so far is wet cardboard on the floors from the ice melting in the restaurants, pic of a toilet with some toilet paper in it, some wet carpets, a few pics of red bags, a line of about 6 people at a toilet. Where's all the pics of the ship almost tipping over, poop all over the floors and walls, piles of rotten food, toilets over flowing etc etc

Well now that their near shore and have shore cell service, I imagine the cell phone pictures will begin to surface online (hopefully)

I'm thinking maybe the news has made it into a bigger deal than it really is... Like they've never done that before

So far I don't see why this is being referred to as a "disaster".

I was picturing something much much worse. The media hype and the fact that people in general are getting wimpier all the time probably accounts for the whining.

They should try doing our jobs for a week.

Re: Disabled Cruise Ship Stuck In Gulf... Stinks!

I love some of the ignorant comments... people are so funny. Yea they can just pull up next to the ship with another mulit-million dollar boat and 4200 people can just hop across a 3" gap and cruise on off in another boat... Right...

Because it SELLS. That is why.

It is merely an inconvenience.

Yeah right. Tell you what wise-azz, stand there at that unloading ramp and remind everybody it was an "inconvenience", and let me take the pics while some middle-aged mama knocks your arse clear into next Tuesday.

LOLOLOL,

I don't get the fun part of 4-5k people stuffed on one boat. That is not a vacation.

Boats sink and planes crash.

We went on a royal Caribbean cruise a few years back. Awesome time.

Unless you've been on a cruise, don't comment on how you can't understand why people go on them.

LOLOLOL,
Perhaps Malco should so she could give her cut directly to him...and then some!

I'd still tell her to cry me a river. Nobody died. So the dream vacation didn't turn out the way it was planned. I would be disappointed too. I am sure they will be compensated somehow. (I'm sure many of us have had vacations that didn't go as planned either) Stuff happens.

Maybe more pictures and videos will surface, but so far all I see is a bunch of pictures with inconveniences. (I've not seen one pic YET where everyone wasn't all smiles---even when holding Help Me signs)

NOT a disaster. Just unfortunate.
