Covid And School

Might as well have a thread about the new school year. I'll start...

Have a client who's a department head at a major university. They have major pressure to, at the very least, have partial in-class sessions, hell or high water...but without any testing whatsoever. Well, my client is trying to cover one's own arse and insisted on getting some testing. Low and behold, the first class has a positive for 8 out 20., i.e 40%. (They're already scrambling to change it all up.)

Post your stories.

Re: Covid And School

Today was my son's first day of school, at the local martial arts academy. They were willing to use their gym to set up desks and let in-person learning take place with a private tutor.
I had not planned on my 5 year old learning striking along with reading this year, but here we are.

Kudos to the MMA instructors for doing the job NJ public schools would not and allowing me to get back to work full time.

Fear does not exist in this elementary school, does it!?

Gotta stop the testing. 8 out of 20 is stupid high and I'll bet the false positives are abound

Re: Covid And School

My daughter starts in person kindergarten tomorrow. Our town has K and 1 going full time, but shortened days, 2-5 are staggered start dates but will eventually be back in the school. All elementary kids will be in pods of 8-12 kids and do all activities within those pods and with the same teacher. Best plan I've heard so far

Up to 90 per cent of people diagnosed with coronavirus may not be carrying enough of it to infect anyone else, study finds as experts say tests are too sensitive

Re: Covid And School

my grand son's "distance learning" didn't work.

he can't logon and the computer people are swamped as the problem is enormous...

plus they want the kids to be in front of the computer for 4-6 hours...

ain't happening, a fly on the wall distracts them...

Lots of login problems here, too. The school system made the news for it.

Re: Covid And School

My 14 year old daughter started high school as a Freshman last week at a private school in our town where 80% of the students are boarding students (she is a day student). Students had to show up with a negative test result (taken within the last 14 days) a week before school started for registration, where they were tested again, out of the 350 test take that day there were 2 positive test results. The entire school gets tested again tomorrow.
They are going to school in person full days, and hopefully it stays that way. Everyone on campus is required to wear a mask at all times, except when eating lunch.
Many of the public schools in our area have adopted some version of "hybrid" learning.

Homeschooling has been wonderful, started a week early so we could take the baby week off. I dont trust any school systems to get things right.

Re: Covid And School

Our town is in full swing, no issues. My daughter is attending her college classes, no issues.

I heard the best way to describe how this should be regarded. Covid could be like the speed limit. It is an arbitrary number where risk is balanced with necessity. If the speed limit were reduced to 10 MPH, fatal car crashes would end. But that is not practical.

Younger people generally aren't susceptible to the effects of covid...any more then they are the flu. GTFOW and let the world move forward. I am good with my daughter being in school, and my grandkids in school. They attend every day and the world didn't end.

Re: Covid And School

School in the city where my son teaches had a cyber attack on the computer systems and one of the things it took down was the bus routing system. They should be going back today. The school had a back up of the system available to reset the system.

Now you have to wonder if it was an attack or just a student who didn't want to go back.

Back in my day, if you wanted to shut school down you just had to sneak into the bus yard at night and unplug the block heaters so the buses wouldn't start in the morning.

Re: Covid And School

My wife’s a teacher (kindergarten). Our school district is one of the few in Colorado with in-person (most have opted to start on-line). This is their third week back.

She feels more like a janitor than a teacher. She spends most of her day cleaning everything and anything touched.

The kids (because last year was shortened, are coming in way behind - they’re still pre-school in their abilities) and will probably leave at the end of the year way behind due to the lack of actual teaching (verses cleaning) that goes on.

Every day I have to talk her off the retirement cliff.

Well, they're apparently using buses as hot spots...

School districts deploy buses as Wi-Fi hotspots to support remote learning: report
Austin, Texas schools rolled out 110 of the buses across the city... https://www.foxnews.com/us/school-bu...emote-learning

Re: Covid And School

My favorite part of all of this is how immediately the dog and pony show breaks down.

We go in somewhere, get our temperatures taken. Get given hand sanitizer. Within two seconds of getting in the place my kid blasts a huge sneeze with a gigantic oozing booger hanging out his nose. Everybody just rolls their eyes and hands him a tissue.

Covid prevention measures are like the TSA. They couldn't catch a cold.

My wife spent many days and hours learning the program and is teaching without any major issues. A lot of the problems lies with the teacher.
