Re: Comments You Hear All Too Often

The ones that get me are any time the HOs are a couple and the wife has a question for me. Infallibly, the husband always happens to be a master builder and needs to show her how much he knows about construction. The two best one's I've heard are:

While looking at a 2x6 plumbing wall in a new build, about 6 feet long, running parallel with the trusses:

Wife: Why is this wall thicker than the others?

Husband: That there is a load-bearing wall. There's a lot of weight on going on top of that thing…

When looking at a set of LSL studs:

Wife: Those look interesting. Why are they different?

Husband: That's special weathered material. They leave it outside longer to age it. That way it becomes more dense and will be more durable.

"So how much to redo a bathroom? Just the basics."

(new shower? yes, new tilework? yes. New floor? yes.....but just a basic vanity and stuff to keep the costs down.....oh, and it would be good to move the light....etc.)

Re: Comments You Hear All Too Often

"It's a really small fix, shouldn't take too long at all"

"I already bought the parts"

"I've got a lot of work I need done in the future"

"I didn't think it would cost that much"

Them: "That's too much"

Me: "Have you had this work done before, have you received other quotes"?

Them: No, I haven't but that's just too much.

When can you start, tomorrow?

The guy at Home Depot said.....

How cheap could you do this?

Can you give us a materials list with the estimate?

Now that I see the size of the windows, it shouldn't be too hard to change the size of it, right?

Sure... doesn't matter if this is what YOU spec'd and they are on order already :banghead:

After you wrap up 3-4 days of working there, you present them with the bill...they hand you the check and say...before you go, could you just________ and look at this______?

3 hours later, you leave.

I usually pull the estimate up in QB and laugh that I worked that cheap once. I've been known to say, that's a great price, I could do it for double in 2 months...then they hang up.
