Check Out This Picture Re: Kids Today

I saw this picture of a playground from 1900:

My first instinct was, "Oh my god, kids today are pussies!"

But then I thought for a second and remembered, "Hey wait a minute, 50 years prior, these little pussies would have been working in a coal mine, not loafing around like a bunch of lazy crybabies on a swingset!"

They ended up being iron workers in the building boom of the Roaring Twenties.

Was reading about the whaling industry in Nantucket and it was saying when the ships were in port the kids would go 'skylarking', climbing up and down the rigging on those masts and spars going hundreds of feet in the air.

You can't believe the regulations on playground equipment at schools.

Stuff has to be inspected by a Certified Playground Safety Inspector.

No swings or anything made out of water pipe.
I've ripped water pipe equipment out that 50 years old and still functional.

Todays stuff lasts maybe 15 years.

Re: Check Out This Picture Re: Kids Today

Tell ya one thing I know: the little chits that do get off their arse and go have fun outside are doing things on BMX, motoX, skateboards, roller blades - well anything with wheels I guess - that my generation never even dreamed of.

I am so freakin' jealous of the kids that grab Big Air, and do complete 360 rotations while 50 ft off the ground - just humbles me.

Yeah, and todays big rage is Pokemon Go

One of the most memorable moments of my entire life was experiencing getting the wind knocked out of me for the first time. I fell off a pipe playground probably only 4 or 5 feet, but I landed flat on my back. I don't even remember pain, just the feeling of absolute panic that I couldn't talk or catch my breath.
Then my Grandfather slapped me on the back and laughed at me.

I lived.

Every time I look at playground equipment all I can think is I wouldn't want anything to do with any part of it. Someone somewhere would find a way to make me responsible for there child being a retard...sad.

I'm looking at that photo and thinking, 'yeah, it really used to be survival of the fittest'.

Re: Check Out This Picture Re: Kids Today

The reality is we, the parents are the pussies. It's not our kids fault we don't let them do anything dangerous these days.

I try to let my kids be kids and hurt themselves, but I wouldn't let my kids do half the dangerous things I did when I was small.

It's not so much survival of the fittest as survival of the timid. And society gets less and less adventurous over time.

Video games don't help either. If you can get an adrenalin rush sitting on the couch, why risk actually hurting yourself... Pussies.

I'd love to build playgrounds but I'd only get one done before I was sued into bankruptcy.

I'm actually going to say it's almost entirely diet.

Compared to 50 or even 30 years ago, there is sugar in EVERYTHING.

The simple carbohydrates combined with less activity is what really pours it on.

I ran amuck at recess, but then once I was back in the lunchroom, I was being fed food loaded with corn syrup.
