I once met a guy who could do stunning calligraphy as fast as you can scribble your signature. He claimed he developed the speed by practicing on top of a hot wood stove.

was that back in 1850?
why would anyone practice anything on a hot wood stove?

Not quite. 1970-ish.

Why? I can sort of see the logic. Challenge yourself to write the word/phrase neatly and legibly before the heat forces you to stop. Much more effective than a stopwatch.

Not saying I'm interested in trying it...
