Any Guitar Players?

I am getting more and more interested in learning how to play. Any suggestions for a newbie looking to get started?

Find a good teacher who can teach you how to practice. Start by learning the blues.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

Get a guitar w/ low action. Too many starter guitars have the strings a good 1/4" or more above the fretboard. You have to push a lot harder to get a clean sound and it's not fun.

Play songs you like and you'll stay interested in it - tab is one way of picking up the notes w/o learning how to read music. there's tons of tab sites for all kinds of songs.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

Grizzly tools make an electric guitar kit that you cut out, sand, stain and assemble... they're pretty neat.
Maybe start on accoustic and take some lessons. Learn classical, blues etc... Hohner makes a pretty inexpense mid line guitar that plays nice and good to start with.
After ya get good, I'll bust out the 6 string bass and we'll rock out!

just do it..........buy the guitar that will make you want to play....don't be afraid and just bang on it! Low action and light strings.

learn a couple chords and strum your ass off!

find tablature to your favorite songs and you'll be rockin' in no time!.....

The fastest, best way to learn is to play with other people.

if your finger tips don't hurt , you're not playing.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

Sure, you want to learn 3 basic guitar cords and they are.....G Major, C Major, and D Major.

An acoustic guitar can be had cheap on craigslist but buy from a person who plays guitar and is over the age of 35. Over time guitar strings put enough pressure on a guitar body to sometimes ruin it so you want to buy it from a person who has taken care of it. I just sold a really nice Korean made guitar from the 90's to a friend for $80 so his kid can learn. In 3 weeks he can already play a couple simple songs.

Like anything in life practice makes perfect. I would pick a simple Beatles song and just keep working at it. Youtube has every video on teaching you will ever need for instruction. Learn to play that one song and master it then move on.

3 cords will play 80% of the music you hear, heck many are 2 cord songs with variations.

Strumming is easy, with practice you can strum a song pretty well in a matter of days.

To be a great guitarist takes years of study, to have fun and play a few songs takes a couple weeks.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

I'm a banjo player because i really like bluegrass. I have a Deering banjo that plays pretty decent for what I do. with it. Some of the best banjos however are home made from a cookie tin and a chunk of maple for the neck. You don't need all the frets either just put in a few you use for some songs and have fun with it, music is all about fun.

last one and I have to hit the sack.

her name is Julia Nunes and she is a youtube sensation will millions of subscribers. She is a great Ukulele player and is really funny as well. Check out this video and watch the whole thing because it gets funny.

A Ukulele only has four strings, it;s cheap, fun as hell, and can play anything.

Re: Any Guitar Players?

If I were you and youre able to I would spend a little more on a good guitar. $500 can get a nice used Les Paul Studio that sounds great and is very easy to play. You can get nice little 15w practices amps for under $100.

Or $500 can get you a nice acoustic. I bought my Takamine for just under $500 and it plays and sounds great. But like others said, look for something with low action, because playability is everything when starting out.

For learning, I didnt have the luxury of the internets. I bought music books and magazines and played with other musicians, but youtube is a great place to learn.

I go here for all my music I want to learn. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

Good luck, let us know what you get!
