Re: Annoying Words And Phrases...

Sometimes I find something irritating and I use it in a tongue in cheek mocking sort of way. Occassionally I find it becomes useful, but I still hold contempt for it in my head.

Aight?

Not a word or a phrase but the idea that IBS in Las Vegas is worthy of a snicker or laugh line is very annoying to me.

Andy.

Infamous on home improvement shows.

Make a nice straight line.
At least 2 nice even coats.

WTF is the difference between a straight line and a nice straight line?
Or an even coat and a nice even coat?

And worse, it seems contagious. That ****er Dean Johnson started doing that on the Hometime series when it first started, and pretty soon, even the framers were do the nice talk BS.

And its been a decade since I watched that nice, Starbucks themed show.

forth

And other archaic English words. Usually done by pols and reporters and other talking heads.

"He spent some time putting forth his ideas on reform."

Really? When you are at the grocery checkout do you put forth your groceries on the counter?

Hometime was nauseating.

I wonder why Roger the landscaper hasn't been forced into retirement on This Old House.

That reminds me of people getting "tapped" for a position. Not hired, not nominated...tapped.

Annoying, yes. But still good for justifying why the price "is what it is", assuming they want it done right....or they had no choice.

I got a call last night for water "running from condo into unit below". Tenant had clogged the toilet, double-flushed, threw some towels down, left it, and went out to attend a party. They will be getting the "is what it is" bill.

Just fancy upper great lakes 'smart people' talk IMHO. I counter with vernalcualr definitions such as : Forth- to spread as in a manure spreader broadcasts bull (and cow) chit out into pasture.

Not one mention yet of, "You know what I mean?" Mostly women use it, and, in some instances, they use it after every sentence.

I had an employee that would say "You know what I mean?". I would respond with "Yeah, I know what you mean. The concept is so simple how could I not?"

"Let that sink in."

The implied correctness of those who use it and the smugness with which it's, by necessity, delivered, is enough to make me want to wring the neck of even the most well- intentioned social media acquaintance.
