I wouldn't want to wait too long to have a nice car, but FFS get a Lexus, Acura, or something from Japan.
My wife is a realtor and consequently we have experience with the luxury brands.......

AND NDW above has a good idea in regard to controlling costs.... the Japanese cars are much much more dependable and serviceable..less maintenance costly....

and I'm guessing your wife is not concerned/targeting the superior handling/driveability of a German car verse a Japanese luxury.... might be a good compromse....

Best..... GOOD LUCK

If your retirement is set and you can afford it, then why not? If you have all your needs, then you've earned your wants. At this point everything doesn't have to be an investment. Life needs to be fun, the younger you can do this the better.

Who knows what will happen in the next 10 years. You or her might get sick. Do it while your healthy and know you can enjoy it. 10 years ago my dad started having health problems with nerves and is now in a care home with next to no mobility. Even talking is hard. If you can afford it now, do it.

My wife wanted a new car. Bought myself a truck instead. She's mad.

Re: Am I Being Unreasonable?

Get the car. It's only money. There's plenty more wherever you get it from. You'll make it all back before you miss it. One thing that we often say in the car forums: "It's not about the money or the miles, but it's all about the smiles."

You aren't getting that luxury car just so you can be flashy and show off.. but it becomes a quality of life issue where you tend to make more money and do better in life once you've reached a certain level. I can say for myself that I was perfectly fine with the amount of money I was making and what I was accomplishing in my business before I flew First Class on a cross-country flight. After that I never flew coach again.

Did that spoil me? Maybe. But being around a different group of people and in a different atmosphere caused me to value my craft more now than I did 3 years ago. Don't deny yourself the finer things in life.

Re: Am I Being Unreasonable?

This is a tough one for me. I see both sides. If it was a difference of 10 grand id say buy it. But double your budget? No way. Especially if you would have to finance.

In a year itll be used like any other car. Plus those top end cars cost a fortune to maintain.

B4 buying, make sure this purchase will clear you of all past, present and future allegations of unreasonableness.

Re: Am I Being Unreasonable?

My ole lady drives a 2000 Honda Accord. We bought it with 25k miles on it for $1500. We sold her sweet Jeep sahara for it.

We like deals, could care less about prestige. A car at the end of the day gets you from point A to point B, and traffic sucks no matter what you're riding in. If your budget is 35k cash than make it happen, it just won't be "new" but it will be new to you.

Total waste of money unless you are quite rich. A car like that is an awful investment. Just my opinion.

"Quite rich" or "can comfortably afford it"? I'm with the "smiles" logic on this one, but only if has the means to deal with the costs.

I had a cool Hawaiian neighbor who was telling me about his desire to move back with his wife to Hawaii when they both retired. They kept delaying since his wife wanted to bank a couple more years in the Fed govt. Anyway, he died before he got his wish. I'll never forget that dude. He was 60-something and in good health when he died suddenly.

Why does everything have to be an investment? What if buying a luxury car didn't impact your financial future? You don't need to be rich for that to be the case.

Traffic is much better in a luxury car vs. a beater.

What if you just want to splurge and buy one just because....

They do have the "wow" factor & are fun to drive.

Get it out of your system & then get practical again.

Being able to spend 80k on something when 8k would suffice is basically the definition of rich to me.
Not everything needs to be an investment, but I usually think of 80k as investment type money seeing as it could provide for the average American for two years.
If that's what he wants then I don't mind, but he asked for opinions so I gave mine. I think his number was much more reasonable than hers.

Re: Am I Being Unreasonable?

As many have mentioned, you can't take it with you. You drive cars for 10 years which means you don't get the new feeling of a different car at all.

One question: is she open to a compromise? The 3 series BMW is around 35k and the 5 series is around 50k. Why not get her a mid level luxury car new? She can still drive a fancier car without touching the 80k range...just my .02.

Last point, if you do buy it, buy it WITHOUT making her pay the extra. Situations like this have a nasty habit of creating resentment and anger where there currently might be none. She feels like she's earned the nicer car and you're blocking her path and making her "go it alone"...
